(ESV) 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Earlier this month, Al Green was one of the recipients of the Kennedy Center Honours, probably the highest award an American artist can dream of. An announcement, which features Barrack Obama singing!, is here:

@Reticent
This is an ode nod for you.
Thanks. This really is good music and takes me back years ago when I was probably of your age group, and a friend had invited me to Guilin - the most natural and picturesque area of China, in my view. It was at a function there that I first heard the elegant sounds of this instrument. Then there was this other long instrument - like a zither - that sits on a stand or planks and has many strings, but whose name I can't quite recall that was also very interesting.

You probably have in mind the guzheng, which is in fact a zither. The other type of zither, which has far fewer strings, is the guqin.

Wow, you are absolutely right the guzheng is a zither.

@MOON Ki already gave you the name of the instrument.
Guilin is a scenic and beautiful city with clean, natural unpolluted rivers and lakes, and perhaps the only place in China without air pollution.
'...Age group...' that sounds like something my dad would say :D Will be doing a European trip next week before starting grad school this fall.

Well, the "age group" line was just to state in jest how long it's been since I made my first visit to China many years ago as a very young man. Where in Europe are you planning to go on your visit?

This is off the beaten charts ....lol
This kind of unique performance and MV is something I would have expected from the quirky Japanese not the Chinese. Interesting.

Among the African musicians who made a huge impression on me when I was a lad: one Miriam Makeba. Beyond her music was her staunch commitment to civil rights, something for which she paid a huge price.
African songbird in full flight:

Makeba was indeed great. Dolly Rathebe, also great, had a smaller impact internationally.
Ntemi Piliso was also an understated composer. Here is one of his compositions rendered by Ned Newitt.

Totally, so despite the CPC's strict censorship, there are many artists and musicians working outside government-controlled channels. However I agree that China is still a looong way from catching up with Japan, or even South Korea.

I found it interesting that a lot of this stuff appears on YouTube, which, like many colourful (?) sites, is "strictly banned, forbidden", and blocked in China ... unless one uses a VPN to do some "unblocking", which activity is also strictly banned and forbidden.

There you go. The paranoid CCP/CPC have tried to stifle free movement of information but the younger generation are always one step ahead of their censorship. Though Facebook and Twitter are also blocked, it's amazing that all my relatives and friends have accounts!

@ Reticent, so do you have suggestions for eye-opening wow places to visit in Europe? My sister and I will be starting starting east and working our way west to England.
A good start point would be Russia. The Western part of Russia, particularly St.Petersburg, is Europen, and has some of the most fascinating museums and architecture in the entire world. I would pick as my first spot the Maarinsky Theater, which houses the great Maarinsky Ballet and the Orchestra. Next would be the Hermitage Museums; they have the old and the new buildings. Be prepared to see the most amazing collection of paintings, sculptures and antiques -- and by the time you and your sis are done touring these two places, you'll both have run out of superlatives to describe what you saw there.
A digression... I find it odd that a country that produced the highly cultured Alexander III, Peter the Great, and Catherine the Great (ok, I know she was Prussian), also produced the thuggish and coarse Putin.
Onward to Prague, a beautiful city on a par with Paris in its architecture and museums. And the Czechs produce great beer.
Austria, the land of Mozart and many other classical musicians of note would be the next stop. If you have a chance go to Salzburg, where he was born and resided as a child and visit the Mozart Museum. If not you can opt for the Mozarthaus in Vienna.
La Scala in Milan comes highly recommended. Two of the greatest classical music conductors in history, Riccardo Muti and the lamented Claudio Abbado, plied their trade there, so why not pay homage to the great ones at their temples.
To Catalan. Check Barcelona and the surroundings in general, and if you still crave architecture, you'll find the works of Antoni Gaudi in the Modernist style intriguing. If you guys are foodie-types, you'll love the cuisine.
On to France. Paris is Paris with the usual, but if you like different... the Catacombs will be one for the memories. Next hop onto the train and head south to Aix-en Provence and the Luberon region, quaint and charming, and my favorite part of France. Food is religion down there.
If the Channel Tunnel folks aren't on strike, try that mode of transport, so that you can check it off your bucket list. Hopefully you don't restrict yourselves to England but add Scotland to your itinerary. In London, I never get enough of the impressive Victoria and Albert Museum, which houses the works of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Then head north to Scotland and Glasgow and absorb the works of the great Mackintosh and others at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. And, finally, don't forget to eat and finish your haggis.
Enjoy.

For Men Only. Possibly helpful advice from Ms. Carr:

On the other side, something different ...
If you grew up in Western Kenya, then you must have heard this one on at least one Sunday. But probably not quite like this:

Last night I came across a "richest in the world, by country" article, and some Angolans (e.g. the dos Santos lady and friends) have clearly done very well for themselves. African style. Bugger the rest.
Here's Bonga, wailing back when ... yearning for great days of peace and prosperity in Angola:
-
Dos Santos makes "our" local Kenyan thieves pickpockets by comparison. But I think it has more to do with what is available to loot than than any altruism on the part of the local thieves.

In these days of D. Trump, perhaps Americans should be on the lookout for "secret Mexicans". Of such, my favourite is Linda Ronstadt. She was so famous for so long as a "proper American" doing "proper American music" that hardly anyone ever thought of her as Mexican. I have listened to quite a few recordings of her performances, but I only have two CDs of those---one a "followup" from the other---and I think they are way up there.
When, "late in life" (but quite a while ago), she returned to her roots, the results were amazing---a true artiste at perfect peak. Canciones De Mi Padre is an astounding recording. I never spruik anything on this thread, but I highly recommend the CD (and follow-up one). The following "live" piece is not the best representative, but have a taste.

Another of my old favourites ..... Hugh Masekela used to tell this story about his arrival in America. The wazungu were astonished that (a) he could speak, and (b) he could do it in English! They attributed all this to his rapid "Americanization" and swore that it had made a lasting impression. Apparently they thought that his pre-arrival linguistic skills were limited to saying "ooga booga!".
Masekela's "tribute" was in what I consider, even now, to be his best work ever: Lasting Impressions of Ooga Booga/ The Americanization of Ooga Booga, with album cover showing the nattily-dressed Mr. Ooga Booga---sharp suit and briefcase but barefoot ... in a tropical jungle.

Yezzir. Oldie nice to see ya. I am still going strong with the kwaito.
Mampitsha takes it out on Babes every once in a while. They(Mampitsha, Tira etc) were victims of their own success in Durban. Professor has also been taking on water for some time. I have seen relatively recent releases by the good Dr. Malinga, though he is also fighting a losing battle to the new wave reduced to little more than a colorful time travelling cartoon.
I was introduced to qcom by a young mzansi college sista. She insisted I play Distruction Boyz from her phone those days when spotify started to take hold and strangers just get to play their shit on your speakers. She asked me to do that ridiculous pistol squat dance move and I politely declined to extend the life on my tattered knees :D.
There is also amapiano wave led by none other Kabelo(a different one - Kabza de Small). When you get a chance listen to this one

he he he @ pistol squat/Vosho dances. That's another huge transition that seems to have happened. Much like mumble rap in the US it's no longer about the music and lyrics but the dancing, repetition of senseless chants and the bass/beat peke yake. I must admit I like gqom a lot regardless. It has grown on me since Sho Madjozi threw some swa lyrics into her version of it humo humo. Destruction boyz stuff is super uptempo bwana. Some of us lost the energy to keep up with these ear splitting high tempo moves kitambo sana. The old heads (Malinga, Lvovo & Professor) just look out of place in some of these millenial videos these days. Let's hope their reinventions of themselves (eg with amapiano- which is not bad at all) will last long term but I highly doubt it. Once a whole genre goes it goes kabsa.
Found a remake of this old gem by Naima Kay. Now these are the tunes I can listen to all day. Reminds me of Summer 2013. Beach hopping and easy sun splashed days. Corona seems to have made those days seem like paradise compared to this new normal.

Juacali this song is came for somewhere deep
My favourite 2000's era (the golden age of Genge) tracks. Reminds me of seemingly simpler times, the old RCBowen, the big change in Kenya in 2002 when our economy turned around permanently for the better, eating chicken wings and dim sum for lunch in Amerikkka while chasing the Amerikkkan dream furiously, easy Summers, long cross country road trips and December amazing visits home to Kwiinya! Before going back stateside to press rewind and do it all over again for yet another year. Crazy how time flies...that was over 15 years ago!
This song (by tattu) reminds me of Calle Ocho Miami and South Beach in general

OutKast - Rosa Parks

1998! A good and bad year for me in equal measure. Another hit from that year...
Why lie. This song ruled 1998, why lie and put the Big Easy on the map in a big way, standing on the shoulders of Master P of course.
That summer was fire!!
Some music etches an imprint that you forever link to a time period. This is one of those. Good memories.

Indeed. The late Dick Clark said it best,.."Music is the soundtrack of our lives." When I listen to certain songs I remember places, faces and eras in my life like it was yesterday, depending on the song in question. These two songs remind me of Friday evenings on the former RCB circa 2002-2010. Stocko in Canada (RIP) Kenyan Plato and his always entertaining opinions, Mungu Ngai Pan with his endless storos, Obadiah Haiwesekani the Hollywood insider (RIP), Garibaldi Gatheru aka KIRGIT. Asali (whatever happened to her?), Mil Polo, the swarm of RVs, Abbyngel, Veritas, Shisheido (Mayweather fan), Zokwe Nyani Kasolo Mkia, Cookie and so many more. As soon as folks started posting mzikis usiku on Friday you knew the weekend was on!
-
This one reminds me of 1998. Funny how time and distance makes the best of friends become strangers. No idea where the homies I used to hang out with and take road trips with back then are. The chick I had a crush on back then (who introduced me to Kwaito in '96) is now a mother of many in Azania sasa hivi!
-
ALL of these ones remind me of being fresh off the boat in the USA (mid 90s) after high school. My first Spring Break, my first jalopy (a huge deal for a 19 year old!), my first summer, winter, my first apartment off campus in the Spring semester..name it! I remember my first day on campus and this pretty African American chick in a drop top Geo (do they still make these cars? :D) was blasting TLC's I've been watching you at full decibel cruising down campus bass and all......
Foxy Brown ruled 1996 with this album, man. Classics tupu from start to end
Big nostalgic tune, 1995
Another big one..hit the charts in 1997
Jalopy cruise music
This one never gets old for me :D
This one reminds me of ATL sana
This song always reminds me of the last days in Kenya, at Carni, before I left!
Where did the time go bro?
-
This one reminds me of tuning in to YFM (SA) online on weekends, for the Kwaito Top Ten around 2013. Pitch black afro's matofo tofo too. Those were the days, man.
and of course our boy Brickz used to rock all speakers with this one..
I am trying to find Ditaba (whether audio or video) by Lebo Mathosa. Cannot find that song anywhere!
-
The chick I had a crush on back then (who introduced me to Kwaito in '96) is now a mother of many in Azania sasa hivi!
Biological clock is not to be denied :D . There was one I knew who used to bandisha picha of every mundane activity on instagram and then then radio silence. I later learned she was grappling with twins.
Thanks for the links. I can see candidates for my spotify library. You can find Ditaba by Lebo on spotify https://open.spotify.com/search/ditaba%20lebo.

he he he he he @ twins.. life has all sorts of crazy twists and turns. Asante but I'm denied on Spotify! They do not allow listens from outside the US. Let me use tunnelbear and see if I can be able to listen to and rip it. Meanwhile ngamatta another classic from those bygone days...

Big Fun - Gap band.
It always amazes me how Kenyans ablod spend 99.99% of their waking moments discussing hopeless Kiinyan siasa 24/7
Life is passing folks by shwaaaaa.

Zola Don't Cry
2004...Before Loyiso got born again and went 100% Gospel (in 2012)
Those three above remind me of the post apartheid first (honeymoon) decade :D.
Another song that reminds me of drop topping in ATL. 8)
R.I.P Tuku. Saturday morning music manenos right here
Houston manenos. Houston is just a terrible city overall, my fren. Whenever I would visit, a day or two was more than enough..needed to get out of that place fast! But the music was good though :D
Summer 07 smash. Time seems to move faster the older we get. Pause button iko wapi?
Throw some D's on that

Good stuff Njamba. My favourite Marley jam of all time is this one .. :D
Reminds me of a dingy apartment house party I went to in my freshman year where they were smoking ndhom like it was Christmas. Beat up ghetto cars outside. Baafrika students and Jameeyakans live live. When Amerikkka was brand new and exciting to us. You got stoned just by being in the room. And the next day classes and McDees shifts ndizo hizo hizo. Kweli tumetoka mbali.

I used to be a reggea nut
At midnight most satos I would be at a Brilliant pale parkland karibu na uhunye high school. Some days we would go to KU HARAMBEE HALL. djs those days were oboho..s Akina Lefty, Papa Charlie, Jack Marley, Bongoman..at ku after midnight it was weed hour. I would occasional hit mama Pima on kamiti road hit two pure shots of nubian gin and they take a mathree.. hapo rounda ya roysambu..I had a membership at brilliant..at coast I would hit reggea nights in south coast and dance with silky silky tugals from Europe. On Sundays we would hit toyz and Florida hapo mombasa town and at night we would go pussy chasing at Eastern Bull. Good times

he he he he he uliona maisha kweli kweli. I remember you mentioning many years back that you also used to go to makuti roofed Shak-a-tak on Diani Beach road. I remember going there around 2010 Dec only to find tusungus and local ngels dancing vigorously to a furious sweat with the ocean breeze cooling the open dancefloor. Visiting Kwiinya from US during dec hols was fun, man. Kila kitu seemed different and exotic. This song below reminds me of those likizos. South Coast is awesome, man.

My favourite "Nostalgia for days gone" songs
Ahmad..back in the day
This Don Henley song reminds me sana of (again) summer road trips with buddies
Summer of '69
Makamero na makaboti...
Remind me
Usher version
"If you love someone you better tell them often..because you never know when they will be layin' in a coffin'" ...word!
"Even the gangstas was dancing like New Edition"
'95 clubgoing and housepartying teens, stand up :D
Time keeps on slippin' away...
Wawesh homesick...used to love this song while in the USA. Life is interesting..Homesick no more! :D

Smooth,
These good sounds are from back when akatas(and other Americans) were at the top of music still producing things worth listening to. Very nice.
This one brings long dormant memories to life.

Biggie Tembo and Bhundu Boys. Put on a nice pair of earphones to do justice to these guitar geniuses.

Trip down memory lane. When Kwaito was kwaito!!
-
First time I ever visited Gauteng 8)
These types of jams were on heavy rotation on all the FM stations back then...

This Old School kwaito mix took me through a heck of a workout, I was bringing out my chop di grass moves at the end :D . I'll try it with the second mix and see how that goes.
Ilog Drum by the prolific Kabza de Smalls. Nice for cruising.

Chonjo sana. That beat is infectious. Speaking of moves. I need to learn this one and unleash it with vigour at all those weddings hapa where furious dancing is the norm. Once again the zimbos seem especially talented in this department.

2000-2010 was an awesome decade man. All these songs take me back to those glory years.
Mzeks' tunes never gets old man
Brown Dash..gone too soon RIP
50-50 Mandoza. I did not know he also died in 2016! RIP
The Blast- Talib Kweli :D and Hi tek. Kweli this song ruled Summer 2000. Reminds me of my graduation and looking forward to life ahead.
Houston manenos...Mike Jones. Reminds me of Tanzanians in Houston and their crazy parties.
Dbanj before he became very famous. Reminds me of drinking very bad wine and Nigerian mamas.
Reminds me of Naija movies and Furahiday nites back then for some reason.
Jamyeakan/Caribbean bashes mems... that's one thing I miss about the USA..crazy diversity everywhere. You meet people from all over the world daily.
2008 was quite a year, man.
What a decade that was.
-
Bamboo before he okokad. These one these one these one reminds me of Takeover DJ's and the Annual Kenyan ATL Thanksgiving bashes.

Mzeks, Spikiri, Mdu, Mawillies etc marked a shift from apartheid era bubble gum to straight up urban kwaito; miros tasting freedom. Most of the modern stuff like GQOM, Amapiano is just a branch of what these guys created.
I had completely forgotten about Wayne Wonder.
Talking of Jamaicans, this number reminds of going to parties in Wrigleyville the smell of weed wafting in the air back when it was illegal :D.
-
Kamo Mphela(Babes latest replacement) and MFR Souls, another recurring theme in recent times.
-

Indeed @ raw urban Kwaito. That, mawillies beat, that beat I tells ya! Too thorough. The young'ins of these days don't know what they missed. Nice throwback@ Brick and "Lee-ace". They disappeared from the scene despite a strong showing with this song. This was Cookie's SC nemesis (the golfer in SC..forgot his handle) 's favourite song on rcb Furahiday nights

Kamo Mphela(Babes latest replacement) and MFR Souls, another recurring theme in recent times.
Very catchy tune. Slim homegirl has dance moves man. Good stuff.

Magesh 2012 smash

Dunia ina mambo. Reminds me of my dad's old vinyl record player. The haunting words of this song still apply to date.

From the Tsotsi (2005) soundtrack.
-
Trompies - SIkia hio Ngoma .
Whoever arranged this song is a genius
-
Karish - talk of a gifted storyteller. Funny guy who believe it or not is now and MCA! These songs remind me of the dark days of 2007/2008 when Kwiinya was rocked to its roots. Watching events unfold flom ablod was not fun.
Muthoni kifagio
Sad song. Seems like it was shot on the same day, scene and set as Muthoni Kifagio (to save money)
-
Karish is indeed funny. The guitar work is not shabby either. I would know, I have tried learning it.
Another blast from the past is Kamaru "Rais wetu alinguruma huko".
-
Tabu Ley was among the last of the great Congo generation, when Congo music was Congo music. It's now struggling for relevance with the flood of so-called Afropop(which can be instantly catchy but also fades just as quickly like used chewing gum).
Tabu Ley - Tempelo

Good stuff. Reminds me of those dark dark days. Hearing Shariff Nassir blurt "Wapende wasipende" on the daily news bulletins, Kuria Kanyingi saying " Wacha tuponde mali kama Moi bado yuko," and the man from Sacho himself saying "Obhosishen, obhosishen gitu gani!" while skulls, limbs and necks were being crushed at Nyayo House. All of them now six feet under. Life is like vapour, man..

Good one. Indeed. Classic tunes that stand the test of time.
Mumble rap is the worst of the new generation, man. Sadly it is catching on here amongst the gengetone and new genres of youth music in Kwiinya. Sounds like a chicken with turrets sqwaking endlessly
Classic tune. When I think Rhumba/Congolese music, I think Africa/being home. Best zikis to chill to on an easy day having lunch on a balcony in the cbd watching humanity flow by bila haraka yoyote kabsaaaaa
-
Boston mems. Charles River, a dunkin donuts on every street where the cashiers short change you every single time, terrible tasting pizzas, birds at Boston Common and riding the T. Boston is actually one of the few North Eastern cities I actually liked.
-
These song these song these song I tells ya reminds me of the the last days of high school...excitement of clearing fourth form. Is there any sweeter feeling than that in this here our Kwinyan Republic?
-No more terrible food
-No more waking up at ungodly hours to study
-No more imprisonment in classes and preps from morning to night
-No more crazy teachers, some with crazy shrubs and opinions
-No more study worthless junk like Organic Chemistry (COOOH=OH) that to this day I have not used even one jot or tittle of
I remember my last day kapsaaaa in school. We were the first ones to leave because our clusters had subjects that were tested early, meaning we left most of our peers rotting in the school waiting for their final papers. I will never forget that day ritru bit ritru bit. Sunny afternoon, bidding my buddy M.K. adios by the school field from the battered car window. Decades on..I have never seen him again since that day. The watchman saying "Kwaheri ya kuonana" at the gate. And those prison gates disappearing behind me forever. Sweet joy! These song these song these song I tells ya was playing on "cassette" in the car...
I later watched Mo Money the movie that year...reminds me sana of those ndays, those ndays, those ndays I tells ya. To be young, carefree, with your whole life ahead of you is something else, man. Then began the quest to escape Moi's Kwiinya and head to the land of milk and honey- USA (so I thought back then)!

Good stuff. Hellyweird is unforgiving. They get these artists/actors on drugs, blackmail them turn them out and spit them out like garbage once done. That's why most of them lose their marbles and stay high 24/7. And that is If they do not whack them first. Look at Cosby. He got too comfortable and thought he was untouchable. Now he is cooling his heels with kina Jaykwon in the pen doing a bid. These world, these world, these world I tells ya!
Mississippi native Alex Oneal is not exception
https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/alexander-oneal-admits-hes-been-6094560
99.999% of Actors and singers in Hellyweird are turnt out druggies, sadly.
These song these song these song reminds me of a certain Christmas spent in terrible Washington DC. A highly overrated city in my modest view.

Nice! House just remains classic throughout. Azania house has deep soul to it and rubs me the right way. Can't go wrong with anything from Bucie... not too tattered long aeroplane flight to a far away destination type music right here;
-
Colonel Abrams - Trapped
Timex Social Club - Rumors
The 80s were glorious years, man. The zikis were innocent and thematically simple.
These songs, these songs, these songs I tells ya remind me of those seemingly simpler times. Reminds me of taking mathrees in town in the late 80s where they would shatter eardrums with these tunes..
The club remix!
a decent 80s and 90s mix
Master P did a remake of Rumors that I like. Reminds me of the one time I lived in a ghetto riding around in a beat up Jalopy in the 90s and sipping toxic OE fawties. Do they still exist?
-
This Kenyan youngster Coco Em is not Shabby with her mixes. Had me looking like a kook at the gym.
NIce! And of course millenials with their cellphones on the dancefloor busy streaming it on instagram :D

Thanks for this one Njamba. Not much difference between Jamyeeaka and Kwiinya in terms of how the place looks. These are our long lost bredren and sistren

Sad that he died of the big mdudu. Philly was the Fela Kuti of East Africa. Speaking of Fela Kuti...
As usual the song is a long one with the words kicking in only after minute 8.54

Miaka ziniaenda, buddies. Back when Juacali used to make really deep songs that hit the soul. Everyone has their life journey. Reminds me of my morning jogs in the US blasting this on earphones

Yes, Lutayo was good. There is also this Afrigo band with Moses Matovu(been around since days of Idi Amin) that I had the fortune of watching live. UG has had a relatively underrated music scene.
-
Philly Lutaya, Daughter is still keeping his memories alive, She has an youtube channel that where I got this from
I watched Philly Lutaya documentary in 1992. It was very inspiring. Changing behaviour around AIDS is not easy. We used to be counseled about this because while I was in high school we Poinked anything that moved in the town that my school was located. Good thing is that we have several students who parents were Medics and so we always had condoms. Man when I think about it I count myself lucky

New Jack Swing is proof positive that nothing lasts forever. When it broke out it was a serious craze that peeps thought would be permanent (just like breakdancing before it). All the songs that charted had New Jack Swing flavours to them and anything that bucked the trend went nowhere.
Casanova reminds me very much of New Years eve 1996 when me and my then girlfriend went and watched Levert perform LIVE right before our eyes on their then Father and Son tour around the States. Ze one currently in Azania grappling with quite a few now not so young kids. She really pestered me to take her and I was reluctant at first but it turned out to be one of the best nights ever. Man those were ze days.
R.IP to the two Leverts who passed on..

Mandoza tribute mix
"You know you are getting old when one of your high school classmates becomes a grandmother." --City Slickers (excellent movie that I highly recommend).
I would modify it to say :
"You know you are getting old when all your favourite artists that you used to listen to while growing up are all dead, and so are many of your peers." 8)
RIP Mandoza

And when you are no longer surprised to be frequently the oldest in a room :D. Or when someone younger(in terms of years) looks old to you. But as long as you are in good health, it's all good. That's all that counts.
This one will go into my next workout. This guy was a no-nonsense kwaito purveyor.

Good stuff. I like the way Naijos are super proud of their culture and music. Big contrast to Kenya where most Kenyans hate "local" music :D

Aston Martin Muzak. This song reminds me of touring San Antonio TX..by far my favourite city it that state. Riverwalk, La Villita, Mexican culture and food and stunning views of Bexar County from the top of the tower of the Americas.

My girlfriend took me backpacking. I dig the song to it Lemaitre-Strobes Part 2( Trying to find my Way back home)
Tumeona mengi kwa hii maisha my mbradza. Really packed a lot of living into our 30s!
-
The song she wrote to get back Nameless :D. Thankfully they are now happily married. Reminds me sana of easy evenings on the Venice beach boardwalk for me, man.

Good stuff. RIP Hugh Masekela. All the greats are gone, man!
Anything by Hugh Masekela reminds me of my college buddy from Namibia. Dude was jazz obsessed. I have never met a person with such a vast collection of jazz music than him. Back then I was slowly acquiring the taste for traditional jazz music so this album was a good fusion of jazz and r&b that helped the process.

The smash that ruled 1994

Professor is understated talent. His style has a character. He can have a mini-cameo that alters the entire song with that "wooosh" sound. I have always thought this guy Nonini reminds me of a Kenyan version of Prof.

While I admit I was a late convert to Rhumba, I feel like I have always loved it with some of these beats.

If I ever decide to become a Kwaito artist I will definitely adopt Professor's gruff grunting style. Or Mandoza's. Or the call and response Big Nuz style accompanied by sundry chants and grunts at the apposite moment accompanied by a thorough beat and hook. That seems to be the formula that works. Woza Summer in Azania right now. Debehn manenos...
These song, these song, these song reminds me of the day I became a US Citizen I tells ya. Back then I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread.
-
Nelly Furtado - I'm Like a Bird
Mzuri stuff. My favourite Nelly Furtado song. Strangely named but the beat and melody are on point. Reminds me of Santa Monica, Cali Saturday nights and that unique ocean seaside smell.
-
Thanks for the Shabba Ranks memories, buddies, whatever happened to the kwuy? Disappeared from the face of the earth after reigning over the charts in the early to mid 90s! Housecall reminds me sana of Carni '95. That was one the songs they played all the time until everyone knew the words..as well as this one...
Woe betide you if you were dancing by the speakers when this jam came on. Your ribcage would be rocked by the thick beats and your liver was in danger of dislocating due to the bass on those 5 foot Carni speakers on all four corners of the dancefloor.

Bottomline CDM is sing about life. His message is that life has a start and end. No man can live for ever and life has an end on this earth
This is life "INO NII THII"
Good stuff Njamba. And a great message. As John Maynard Keynes once said.."In the long run we are all dead." Maisha in Kunjienjoy swinnghh swanngh while we are alive bro. Nobody is promised tomorrow. In my primo and high school class many who we used to crack jokes with shwaa daily (including my deskie in primo) have gone like flies over the past couple of decades.

Simon Chimbetu - Chautah
That guitta, that guitta, that guitta I tells ya! As we have said before, the Zimbos seem to have been given the guitar gift! Very nice.
-
Nkurunziza Francois - Ubukene Bwa Karande
Kirundi/Kinyarwanda has a very distinctive sound to it. I once had some two very close lady friends (and neighbours) in the US who just happened to be Hutu and Tutsi respectively who lived together. Was shocked that they spoke fluently to each other fweeeeeeeh with 99.99% mutual intelligibility That is when I realised tribalism in Burundi and Rwanda is just an artificial colonial construct.

Hottest song in Naija this year that has spawned a dance challenge almost as much as Jerusalema on tik tok, which increasingly is moving out of the teens and young adults zone into the mainstream. I predict TikTok will be the new insta but for videos. Sooner or later everybody will be on it.

Been looking for this song for ages. Thank God I found it.
Reminds me saana of Memphis TN, late Summer, 2009
Beale street Jazz nights. I will never forget Robert Church Park in the evening. That atmosphere is something I have never experienced anywhere else, in my life. Trombones, trumpets, diverse crowd of all races, kids running around as their parents danced to the music..sepia sunset glow peppered with the glint of orange evening park lamps casting a unique glow all around. Very unique place.
The mighty Mississippi River with its riverboats coursing away gently to the sea nearby
The Best BBQ in the USA bar none (you can take that to the bank!)
Graceland - it was like stepping back in time into the 1970s.. a bit creepy walking through the rooms and sitting on the same furniture he sat on and boarding his now permanently grounded plane, but it was interesting to see how the king (Elvis) lived
Lorraine Motel
Mud Island.
Memphis gets a bad rap, man....they even had downtown cable cars. I would even rank Memphis a notch above Dallas, Atlanta or Houston which are just terrible cities overall with nothing worth seeing or doing there worth writing home about.
Those were the days... For those of you still in Babylon..I envy you. For some of us the thrill went a loooong time ago. Not because we've been there done that and wrote the book, but just because we moved on to other more interesting things in our life phases. Life is a funny thing.you dream of something (eg going to the USA) you do it thoroughly, then you move on and tell your totos stories about it. Who knows, in 20 years time we might move to New Zealand like my Japanese lady beshtie I met in Asia many years back. She vowed she will NEVER go back to Japan except in a coffin. Yet so many want to go to Japan. These are the ironies of life I tells ya. Hata hapa Kwiinya I always crack up when I hear young fellas prating about how much they want to go to USA. When you tell them you were tired of the place they look at you with a genuinely puzzled look. Maisha ni kupanda na kushuka, as you board the matatu fleeing your location in one direction others are climbing out of it fleeing where you are going to..heading to where you came from thinking tis paradise

Memories I tells ya. Music is quite something in terms of having this funny little habit of stoking them big time.

Yeah. It's been a recurring beat the few times I have been in a gathering this year. Burna Boy is another naija that seems to have gone mainstream; they even play his music in the gym. John Vuli Gate is also trying to see if it can match Jerusalema. I doubt it, but it's apparently a craze in SADC

They are naturals. They call it Sungura. A result of trying to recreate the mbira sound on guitar, I suspect.

December in Kwiinya Krisi visits from ablod manenos, 2010. These song, these song, these song I tells ya reminds me of the dance floor at Tamasha in Hurlingham with the supuu young chikindees getting down to its beat chwi chwi chwiiiiii. Whoa, ten years have passed since then! Those Krisi hols are what stoked the appetite to come back to Kwiinya for good. Does that club still exist? I have not heard anything about it in years.
Those truly were the days.
-
Coasto agendas that same unforgettable Krisi (Dec 2010) I do not think there was any club in the nation that did not play this song at least once!
Reminds me sana of Tandoori Bar 8)

These songs remind me of that ganja smoking buddy of mine from SwapoLand in my undegrad years. He was reggae (and ganja) obsessed and always had a guitta nearby. One day we walked into a convenience store pamoja and we were locked in (automatic door) and the cops were called because with his huge jacket, scary looking dreads and weed smell, the cashier feared that he had a gun and we wanted to rob him (a tiny AA guy)! Thankfully when the AA heard the African accent and my buddy showed him he had no gun under his jacket..the AA relaxed and let us go.
He always talked about forming his own band some day. Have not seen him since around 1998.
So you can imagine my SHOCK when I found out he actually has a band that is causing quite a buzz in his country after renaming himself FAIRDREAD HAUKONGO :lolz:
-
Zulu Mkhathini - Uniform
hehehe DJ Tira still going strog holding his own with the millenials.
Those (dangerous) Gauteng area trains bring back memories.

Nice. Interesting blend of country, bluegrass and rock
-
Sting - Fields Of Gold
Mid 90s music! Sting always writes morose, nostalgic songs.
80s music. These song these song these song reminds me of my displaced life hambload craving to come back to my hometown. Dunia ni duara. Eventually everybody comes full circle. I highly recommend the Namesake (movie) by Mira Nair to explore this theme of the joys and mostly the agonies of being a diasporan living in the West.

Another year gone just like that. This one has definitely been the strangest one since 2001 (9-11 Attacks and aftermath)
1995 smashes. Did you know that she died in an airplane crash in 2001?
These songs remind me of the road trip we made with buddies to Buckhead ATL in 1997. Back then Buckhead was party central. Seems like just yesterday. Partied till asubuhi na mapema including an early morning shift to club 112 (does it still exist?). Those truly were the days.
More that went south this year.
https://www.popsugar.com/celebrity/celebrities-who-died-in-2020-47084634?stream_view=1
I do not watch news so was shocked to discover Zindzi Mandela, Kofi Annan, Alex Trebeck, Burt Reynolds, B.Smith, Andre Harell have all gone south! Life is but a puff off smoke, folks. Do not waste it on things that do not really matter in the big scheme of things. Remember how Annan and Gicheru were at the centre of the msukosukos of 2007 that Kwiinyans spent 23 out of 24 hrs a day discussing siasa over? All gone. Oloo also gone. Let's make good use of time, my pipo. Shalom.

These song, these song, these song I tells ya. Takes me back sana
- Nai in the early 90s
-Being fresh out of highschool waiting two long years to go to campo due to messed up intakes
-Feeling of having too much time on my hands..those two years were the longest in my life so far
- Height of the KANU error. Crazy politics, protests and incidents. One day I was walking down Moi Avenue towards University way. Three smartly dressed (suits) gents were walking about 10 metres ahead of me. All of a sudden the guy in the middle takes off running at a speed to rival David Rudisha! The two guys next to him took off running after him at top speed. Right at Univeristy way is where they shikad him. You just see them removing their guns from within their suits. Kumbe the guys were special branch and they were arresting one of those underground opposition activists and taking him (I suppose) to either Kingsway House or Central Police Station to finya his vitals! Those were some crazy years man.
-Also reminds me of the Pattni saga, Grand Regency/Goldenberg....
-And planning with buddies which next house party or club we were going to go to usiku almost every other day
Those were the days

I think they were kind of taking a dig at Jobergers just as Snoop, Dogg Pound and the West Coast crew singing New York New York back in the day :D
Mapintsha and Babes' relationship is toxic. I doubt they will last long. The slaps she receives in this clip that she broadcast live on insta back in 2019 are cringeworthy. They probably were heard 10 miles away.

Wyclef 911 is a classic. But my life is more likely to be about music from the South than Ndombolo ya solo :D , which is also nice. I am a late convert to Ndombolo ya solo. I think machoman is the authority in that area.

Who can forget Brickz?
Spikiri - Gangsta Party
2000-2010 was the golden era of South African Music to me. Kwaito at its finest. These jams bring back so many memories of fun times for me. Easy summers in the USA, SABC videos, tuning in to YFM (Yona Ke Yona) for the Kwaito top ten (which they shelved ages ago), Metro FM cape town for SA House. For some reason they always played extended house mixes (no vocals) for hours during SA summers (Dec) back then. Those were some good days. "My bird" tells me that this corona thing is here with us to stay meaning those simpler times will never happen again..at least in the next 5 years to come :D. Thanks for these ones, man

Funny how times change.
Kwaito - more or less gone...
Gqom - took over from Kwaito..now fading away into Amapiano

Yebo. I would stretch it into the late 90s. That time it was Brenda Fassie trying to stay relevant with some success. Today, it's Dj Tira, Mampish - the wife-beater with slaps heard all the way from Deben to Livingstone, Zambia.
Talking of Zambia, just brought back Anna Mwale, then a hot and natural spleng when she released it.

Yep. Catchy. A promising lad. It has the elements to become a new sound. Kenya could use our own homegrown replacement to genge. I get the impression the Sauti Sols etc are not particularly great at nurturing upcoming talent, hogging the limelight to themselves :-\ .

Asante for this one Termie. I love nostalgic coming of age odes. Like Summer of 69 by Bryan Adams.
Time keeps a-slippin' away folks....
This one reminds me of my brief Caribbean vacation in the sweltering summer of 2010. Funny how I had long forgotten about it until I looked at my journal of around that time. Keeping a journal is priceless, especially when one travels.

Yep. The Bryan Adams summer of 69 is a classic. It takes you back to a time you feel like you were there even if you weren't.

When covid plays out over the next 5 years and beyond, folks will remember the 90s, 00's and 10's as the best times of their lives. "My bird" tells me that life will never ever ever go back to how good it was back then.

1995 was my year, man SMH. This whole album was FIRE :13:
Whatever happened to the RCB mid- '90s late teens and early twennies?
Wakina Asali
Bryan275
Mungu Ngai Pan
And everybody else?
Me against the world hit the charts a mere months before I left Kenia for the USA, leaving flames in its wake. We had our whole lives ahead of us. Hard to describe that optimism and sense of excitement of youth.
Dear mama with its thumping bassline rocked speakers at Carni, JayKays and Visio bwaad. Then hunting for delicious Topaz kukus at 5 oclock in the morning!! Tupac was so real, man. He wasn't rapping, he was just delivering pure truth on wax no filter. That's why he was so loved man. No fakeness at all in everything he wrote.
And once I got to the land of opportunity, I will never forget the first time I heard Temptations BUMPING from a '95 Mazda MPV with crazy woofers back when folks used to cruise and show off on Canal St in the Big Easy during my school break after the first sem in school. I was blown away by the cars, the chicks, the seeming wealth of these young guys and gals which was quite awe inspiring for a nobody from Nairobi  . The Big Easy is a crazy nice city man, unique in the whole wide world. Canal, Bourbon, The Garden District, Congo Square jazz nites, Jackson Square. ...strong coffee and beignets at Cafe Du Monde at the French market the next morning after we woke up after a night of partying? Let me just shut up man SMH. Those surely were the days!!

Chonjo sana. You are right about Davido staying relevant via collabos. He reminds of Mejja in Kenya. Was making genge songs in the 90s to early 00's but the millenials kiddos still love him because of his collabos with totos who are their peers. Another OG in Kwiinya who is causing chaos on the charts is Kalligraph Jones/Papa Jones wa Kayole. Rap flows so far unmatched for the past 5+ years and both his peers and the millenials are huge fans. He has somehow made swa rap flows cool even among so called posh kids.

Good stuff. These are the songs that put me on likizo mode on the many balconies of the hundreds of Somali restaurants in Kenya that have flooded CBD that serve food of better quality than Chili's! Come home my broda. Masiku zinaenda. Kavid has taught us that life can change drastically at any time. Sisi hapa tunanjienjoy jiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. As I told you before I wish I had returned 5 years earlier! We are still playing catch up with dudes who came back 10 years earlier and are now on their fourth or fifth apartment complexes in Kili or processing coffee through value addition and selling to Quickmart while buying porsche Cayennes and vacationing in Vipingo Ridge every few weeks! USA is nice while young (18-45) after that nyumbani ni mambo yote.

Bad memories kabiza, kabiza, kabiiiiza from this one. NYC, Summer 1998.
It's crazy just thinking this song came out 23 years ago! Seems like just juzi :o

Njamba, these songs these songs these songs I tells ya remind me of Boston. Or Baaawston as the local ferengis call it. Boston is just a unique place, man. I liked walking through Sommerville each morning tena saana. Easy neighborhood with lots to see and do. Riding the T too was fun (why is it called the T again?)! Na a mhindi owned Dunkin Donuts seemingly every two steps you take  Na Charles River cruise shwaaaaaaa after shopping at Cambrigeside Galleria. And shopping for latest gear at Filene's basement wit it's crazy bargains! I wonder if it still exists. And those pizzas..auuuuuuiiiii. These were the songs that were playing in the car around that time. Feels like yesterday pwana. Enyewe Stateside had its fun moments. The mid-2000s were some of the best yet

When L.A. use to run tings
G-Funk Era, Dre and Snoop, Eazy-E, West Coast. When the West took over, they took over for like 5 years non stop from 1993!
After Dre Day came out, everybody in the West wanted a '64 Chevy Impala on hydraulics. And when Pac joined Death Row it was GAME OVER. Why lie there is no place like L.A. ESPECIALLY in the Summer 8). Those were surely the days :D

This Kaligraph is good. I have heard of the guy but not listened to his music till now. His rap is totally legit and not the usual tacky stuff some of the genge artists put out there.

You know a song is fire when it sparks a tiktok craze in Kwiinya

When I heard these song these song these song in a mathree in Kenia on my way to tao in 1995, I couldn't wait to experience a USA summer. I miss USA summers man. Was always the best time of the year for me. BBQs, the beach, fly honies and cruising around town, preferably with the top down 8)
-
These song these song these song i tells ya is anoda wan that reminds me of end of summer 1995 when it was causing a storm on the charts. Freshman year when I stayed in the dorms. Terrible experience. My roomie was an AA named Dushwan who smoked weed daily and had very long unkempt hair. He dropped out even before the semester was over to join those TV technical colleges that teach you how to repair fridges na kadhalika. I wonder where he is now or even if he is still alive!

I never get tired of hearing her sing.

Take me back to Summer 1996, man. Everything else is kelele.
Whatever happened to Total?
-
Carni dancefloor manenos 1994-5 SMH. The remix was even more thorough. One needs a music system with serious bass to truly appreciate it.
If you didn't own anything from Karl Kani back in those days, too bad! Right before Tommy Hilfiger took over.

Hootie and the Blowfsh, man. This song reminds me of cheap beers, cigarette smoke in clubs and live bands when we would go clubbing
Friday nights after a week of grueling classes back in late 1996!

I have this one on spotify, and was listening to it juzi as I drove past Kalamazoo :D on the way to a graduation in Lansing. Good sound that can never age.
Another sound on that playlist was Joe Public

Thanks for this one Termie. These songs are timeless and seem to get better each year just like fine wine. Joe Public had some serious smashes during that era, man. Deep message too in this hit.

Thanks for this set. First one has unmistakable classic Mbaqanga beats that takes you all the way to kwazulu. Then Oskido, professa etc back when these wazees were on top. Yebo, no lie detected, the amayellowbone are nice nice kishenzi :D.
Another one from those wazees that sometimes still rings in my head.

Man man man, Y-Tjukutja has taken me back to 2013 when it ruled the airwaves. Ahsante! Still a serious banger when listened to hata sasa. Mafikizolo seems to be timeless. Still unleashing hits that are charting to this day. Songs like these keep telling me that a trip back to Joh-beg after all these years is long overdue.

These song these song these song I tells ya brings bad bad baaaaaaad memories of yet another pretty and slim chick from yet another neighbouring African country I was into in 2005 when it came out I tells ya.
I remember it like it was yesterday. We hit the clubs together in the 4by 4 bumping this whole album. We sipped like 3 long Island Iced teas each all boo-d up at one hip hop club, Amazing time pamoja. After that club we went to a soul/jazz club at 2am for even crazier fun. On other nites we would end up at IHop in the wee hours of the morning after clubbing..jus talking and joking and laughing ritru bit ritru bit kabiza kabiza. If she is somaring this I bet she can't claim she doesn't remember those good times. Sasa the famiiar storyline tu. Kako presently married saddled with a toi. Isapite :D. Masiku zinaenda. 16 years and counting since!

1998 was another awesome year, man
Been around the world to-nigh-yai-yaight! This song reminds me of my first jalopy ever. Heady times.
Before everyone started hating on Puff, he was the man back then;
"Quit that (uh-huh) You a big cat?
Where your chicks at? (where) where your whips at? (where dey at?)
Wherever you get stacks at, I'ma fix that
Everything that's big dreams, I did that".....BARS man
Who remembers TEB with their sing-songy half-rapping style? Simpler times. What was I doing in Summer 1998 (that's how I remember my time in the US - summers because they were always unforgettable :D) ? Colle. Road trips. Fawties. House Parties. Jazz and Blues. ATL manenos. Crazy work shifts. Pretty colle chickindees young and hot all over the place during classes. Those surely were the days.

Take the L train to 8th avenue
Grown folks music. I found NYC to be a very strange city. Only place in the world where you can be surrounded by millions of people from across the globe yet feel very alone.

Tzian parties in H-town that would go on till dawn, man. Wazee hukumbuka!

These types of songs only sounded right when they came out of something like these like these like these in the 80s jameni. In between airforce '82 coup announcements of course. Majengo siendi tena.

Some of the most soothing sounds to come out 254. You realize with time just how underrated them Mushrooms were.
:D @ airforce coup announcements. They did indeed play some bangers in between their drunken announcements.
Kenyan music is at its best when they keep it simple.

Very soothing music. Voice reminds me kiasi of Baaba Maal. Whatever happened to him by the way?

When this album was released in Spring 1996, nobody knew how huge it would get. It ruled the summer fuaaaaa with no real competitors and still bumps quite nicely to this day. it also spawned Lauryn Hill who went on to sell a gazillion records on her freshman album, before going looney after all the rituals and Satanic stuff she had to perform to maintain her fame and fortune. Just like Lark Voorhies. Isapite. Fame and fortune aint no joke, ma brodas and sistrens.
Oooh la la la (refugee camp remix) brings nice mems of my old hooptie that kulad serious miles on roadtrips with lady and jamaa friends to different towns and cities around where we went to colle. The funny thing is we were so tight as buddies back then, now we are scattered all over the globe and do not even keep in touch. I remember it like it was yesterday. Echoes of our laughter in the car, these joints bumping, even what the ladies were wearing and what we were drinking. At some point the driver was getting drunk so he stopped the car by the side of the road and asked me to take over since he didn't want to get caught on a DUI by the po po! life is something else. Best friends can become strangers easy due to time and distance. Enjoy each moment because tomorrow is not promised buddies...is the moral of the story.

John Karani, Topi Lyambila on Late night Radio
DJ Pinye Club Jungle when he was fresh from the UK (before he started spinning at JayKays)
Classic FM still plays this jam from time to time.
Reminds me too of those pimped out mats with serious Kenwood speakers blasting into Tao back then. Simpler times. Nostalgia galore. President Moi's face and larger than life voice everywhere. Can you believe he's been gone for a year and a half already? Us youngsters looking forward to uni and the next phase of our lives back then. Carni dancefloor of course packed bin packed! Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
La la la la...
Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
La la la la...
Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
La la la la...

Man, man man maaaaaan! This song brings back memories! In 1994-5 there wasn't a mathree, a club, a pub, or a heng at which this song wasn't played. Carni played it so much i thought it was the official soundtrack of the club! Asante sana.

Your ear is on point man. Super similar indeed. When Lebo went solo is when her full talent came to fruition. I still dig her boom shaka cuts though. Lerato (translation adoration/love) is a timeless classic, man. Every year when I listen to it, it seems to get better and better. 90s kwaito needs to come back maaan!

Thobela. Looks like the (very rare and hard to find) video was shot in Camps Bay.

Heard this track on this mix hapa >> on a long road trip out of NRB watching the landscapes roll by and wondered why the heck I had never known about if before. Heavy K, Mpumi, Prof = Mambo Kwisha!! Very soulful.

Oskido still keeps his strange hat year after year
Azania bafazi. Auuuuuuuuwiiii :13:

These song, these song, these song I tells ya brings baad baaad baaaaaaaad memories papa. Takes me back to 2008 October to 2009 August. The worst year of my life in stato. There is a dark underbelly to Hamellica that most pipo never experience. Wacha niache maneno yangu hapo before I scare watus. The Master P remix of 1997 (best listened to on a system with full bass for a proper experience) is equally haunting for me to this day, I tells ya smh. Maisha si mjezo, my frens. Ni kupanda na kushuka. Just pray to God you never get to experience what I experienced back then. Trust me, you would not wish it on your worst enemy

Drumboss is a problem with kwaito(proper) mixes.
That last video brings back memories I had totally forgotten I had. I just noticed Tira was in it, literally an extra. He was a relative unknown when it came out. Prof and Oskido have definitely been around the block. Of course the bafazi are another problem yoh :D.
Here is another kwaito(proper) number from TKZee. TKZee was my first real live kwaito experience(competing with Boom Shaka at the time) , sending me on a path I have never looked back from.

Indeed. She released a lot of timeless classics. If Lebo and crew were playing today(with the current ease of exposure), they'd be fairly mainstream even in the states.

Lyrics
Oh, yeah, yeah
Sometimes we fall down, can't get back up
We're hiding behind skin that's too tough
How come we don't say I love you enough?
'Til it's too late (it's not too late)
Our hearts are hungry for a food that won't come
And we could make a feast from these crumbs
And we're all staring down the barrel of a gun
So if your life flashed before you
What would you wish you would've done?
Yeah, we gotta start lookin' at the hands of the time we've been given
If this is all we got, then we gotta start thinkin'
If every second counts on a clock that's tickin'
Gotta live like we're dying
We only got 86, 400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell 'em that we love 'em while we got the chance to say
Gotta live like we're dying
And if your plane fell out of the skies
Who would you call with your last goodbye?
Should be so careful who we left out of our lives
And when we long for absolution, there will be no one on the line
Yeah, we gotta start lookin' at the hands of the time we've been given
If this is all we got, then we gotta start thinkin'
If every second counts on a clock that's tickin'
Gotta live like we're dying
We only got 86, 400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell 'em that we love 'em while we got the chance to say
Gotta live like we're dying, oh, like we're dying, oh, like we're dying
Like we're dying, oh, like we're dying
We only got 86, 400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell 'em that we love 'em while we got the chance to say
Gotta live like we're dying
Hmm, you never know a good thing 'til it's gone
You never see a crash 'til it's head on
Why do we think we're right when we're dead wrong?
You never know a good thing 'til it's gone
Yeah, we gotta start lookin' at the hands of the time we've been given
If this is all we got, then we gotta start thinkin'
If every second counts on a clock that's tickin'
Gotta live like we're dying
We only got 86, 400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell 'em that we love 'em while we got the chance to say
Gotta live like we're dying, oh, like we're dying, oh, like we're dying

We only got 86, 400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away

Asante sana for these! Why lie, 1986-1989 was a serious sweet spot in musicdom. Songs like these dreams always transport me back to those days. Upper 80s ballads, soft rock, then came New Jack Swing and the Bobby brown era when he took over for 5 years with no mercy for anyone else!!

Of all the music on the continent, I think SA music is the most soulful and soothing. Even the Congolese don't come close. Funnily enough it's countries that suffered the most oppression that seem to produce the best music in the world. Examples USA (slavery) - black music. SA - Apartheid ; good music all round. Congo; Plunder, death and poverty; Rhumba/Lingala :D

Kali sana. I loved how he synced the vids with live performances and some of their original music videos. Serious trip down memory lane.

These song these song these song I tells ya brings baaaaad baaaaad baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad memories blo
Blankies and Wine Dec 2011. This song was playing everywhere not just in Kwiinya but on radios flom ablod around the world
Juzi was going through FB and bumped into the ka-chick (not the one from Azania nor the other one ). These one was much younger blo. Slim tallie with a face like an angel and more back than a sack of Duncan Hines :o. We had amazing times together juu she was always high energy, down for whatever and could party like one of the kwuys. Her weddo was juzi! And this somebody that I used to know was looking real good during the wedo blo. Hubby ni bazenga kama mimi tu. Isapite. Life has all sorts of twists and turns!
Did I hear RV Punda calling for primitive war cries with knees to the ground in 2022? Very funny. Where will he and his mamma and tois be when people are being slaughtered like chicken upon his incitement? Mars? Mzalendo Kibunjia + ICC should both swoop in on K Mambo asap. Punda aende kanisa atubu dhambi. Hiyo ni upusi jameni we want peace in Kwiinya.
-
This song reminds me of Asali of RCB who once sent it to me 8)
I should start an "RCB reloaded" forum so we can fish out those old members. Online life has never been the same since tusungu twa Tenwek yanked the old site!!
Life is an interesting journey, man. Never ending in its twists, turns, experiences and variety.
Would be curious to know what happened to everyone over a decade and change on (for those who lived!)
RIP to Stocko, Oloo and any others we may have lost along the way...

Smooth arrangement Vumani Makhosi by Letta Mbulu. Siyajabula :D .
I agree. Music was the one avenue they could not close. I would add Zim to that mix.
Kabsaaaaaa. Tuku for example simply never gets old

Songs have that effect man. This one sounds mid-upper 90s. Sounds like he's not really talking about a girl but about emerging from the innocence and idealism of youth, finding out life/politics/adulthood is ugly for the most part and struggling to cope with disillusion. Deep, haunting lyrics.
These one these one these one brings back bad memories. Summer 1997. The fleetingness of life.
Speaking of which. Came across this video leo. We used to watch these dudes in movies in the 80s, 90s and beyond na wameenda. Sidney Poitier gone today. Colin Powell gone juzi. Wakina George Bush sr all gone. Life is short buddies make the most of it.

Yet another haunting song from 1996 about the vanity of the life journey
Jan lays down and wrestles in her sleep
Moonlight spills on comic books
And superstars in magazines
An old friend calls and tells us where to meet
Her plane takes off from Baltimore
And touches down on Bourbon Street
We sit outside and argue all night long
About a god we've never seen
But never fails to side with me
Sunday comes and all the papers say
Ma Teresa's joined the mob
And happy with her full time job
Do do do do do do
Am I alive or thoughts that drift away?
Does summer come for everyone?
Can humans do as prophets say?
And if I die before I learn to speak
Can money pay for all the days I lived awake
But half asleep?
Do do do do do do
A life is time, they teach us growing up
The seconds ticking killed us all
A million years before the fall
You ride the waves and don't ask where they go
You swim like lions through the crest
And bathe yourself on zebra flesh
I've been downhearted baby,
I've been downhearted baby,
Ever since the day we met

Hauuuuuwwwwiii. Diani Beach 2010 September to Nairobi. These two songs were rocking all the dancefloors viserious.
And of course walevi Kenyans were loving this song :D

I was never a country fan growing up, mpaka I lived in the South briefly, na hapo it cannot be avoided. Country music grows on you like a crazy girlfriend with mingi drama but is super attractive so you just learn to deal.
This song takes me back to summer 2009 when it had just been released. 10am jogs at my local park. And biking motivation from Sakokwabako wa RCB. I wonder what ever happened to him. I should go back and visit that place (local park) one day.
-
One of my Country faves of all time.
Don't blink. 50 years goes faster than we think, buddies.
-
Nice country numbers.
Me, I grew up liking country(alongside other genres) with Don William and Kenny Rogers as the lead suspects. I only realized that's it's "redneck" music when I got to the States :D .

Rod Stewart. Forever Young (1988)
Had long forgotten about this one until I dug into my archives from 2008/09!
The 80s were a musically pure era. Simple themes. Basic melodies bila complications mingi.
-
Classic from Bobby's 1988 runaway smash album "Don't be Cruel"
They don't make music like this no more brother.
Heard it playing at my barbershop in Nai on hols from majuu around Dec 2010 hapo. Reminds me of how fast Kenya is changing. Back then Kibaki was prez, Mo1's terrible memory was still hovering with us and Obamaphoria had gripped the world.

Priceless classic and smash hit in 1994. Generation X anthem, just like the movie Reality Bites that is a generation X classic to date.

Good one. When I was 19, I had a buddy from Swapo-land in his early 30s in my colle who used to make fun of me for only listening to hip hop tupu back then.
Dude had an incredible collection of hundreds of CDs of all sorts of genres. Jazz was probably 50% of it. He told me the difference between listening to what's hitting in hip hop and listening to classic stuff is that by the next year the hip hop hit is gone forever and forgotten while classics just need re-mastering for sound and can be listened to enjoyably 30 years down the line! Took me over a decade to finally understand what he meant. Timeless nostalgia tinged lyrics in this one.
-
Another gen x classic.
Firehouse - Love of a Lifetime
Soft rock golden era (late 80s - mid 90s). Reminds me of Bon Jovi.
-
Rediscovered this 2007 Yves Larock gem by accident after having not listened to it in 15 years!
Reminds me of riding in the hooptie in Venice to sweltering hot Venice Beach in the summer and how crazy the Boardwalk all the way to Santa Monica was back then (2007/2008/2009). I remember the sights, ocean smells and sounds of the place just from listening to it. Funny how long lost songs bring back long lost memories!

Moto sana bro asanta! Everywhere is definitely a classic. One of those that are timeless like Take That's - Back for Good (1995 smash)!
Good memories. That jam (Everywhere) takes me back to 1987 man and the serious crush I had on a kaslim pretty in late primo. These gels these gels these gels I tells ya. Decades later I met her in person again and even spent a few ndays with her, she was still single but the spell was broken. Everything was different and some repulsion set in humo humo at the person I saw ritru bit, ritru bit! Time changes everything, blo.
Everywhere also reminds me of Nai in the 80's an interesting yet crazy time with torture chambers at their height!
Been mulling about the life journey lately. In the long term it seems, nothing we take seriously ad interim really matters. Songs - the soundtrack of our lives - keep the memories alive for a minute or two but mwishowe coffin ni iyo iyo tu.

Smash of the year blatha. Can't get enough of this song! :respect:
I think they sampled Zapp and Roger's Computer Love beautifully
And of course nothing sounds sweeter than bafana ba Azania crooning in Zulu/Xhosa

Is that Phil Collins on the drums? :hee20hee20hee:

Safi sana. Has a bit of a Kwaito old skool throwback touch to it, these one. Complete with call and response chants.
The million Rand question however is will that 1987/88 Beemer 318 ever go out of style in Azania?
Has been a staple in all their vids since the 80s!
I guess because those tire-ruining street spin fests made it super popular.

1991 man. 31 years ago believe it or not!
They just don't make music the same way no more.

Songs are crazy things. They can take you to long forgotten places. This one takes me back to a road trip I made with friends and the azanian chick I had a crush on back then to the Crescent City during my colle days. I can still remember the conversations, echoes of our laughter, the heated debates, the sunny summer breeze, everything. And the traffic jam into the Big Easy when we arrived there around 3pm on a weekday. I also remember us pub hopping on Bourbon that whole evening! Back then I was a drinker so I remember us getting wasted at some joint near Royale st. We didnt even stay the night. How we drove all the way back to the city we were living in back then is a blur.
Age and time also changes everything. At present;
- The chick is back in Azania with a half-akataa kid tall as me. We haven't spoken in well over 25 years :o
- My best buddy who accompanied us on that trip moved to a different city in the late 90s, got involved in criminal activity and got deported
- The chick's two cuzos, one who was the driver, after that trip I never saw them again
- My best buddy's chick was dumped by him a year or so later, she relocated back to her home country, got married, had a boyshaod and guess who she named the kid. The ex boyfriend
Hii maisha ni tricky blathee. About 5-10 very close primo and seco and uni buddies are all six feet under. One other lost his marbles in Canada. He was super popular and had all the esto chicks back in the day.
I used to value money up until this year. Now nothing here on earth really matters to me any more kabisha kabisha. Been there done that seen it all in this third rock from the sun na hakuna kitu special humu humu manze.
Ni hayo tu.
-
these one these one these one came on in my ride and is a thumper. The bass and melodies alone blathees....

1995 was a beautiful year. This jam still thumps as nicely as it did back then and brings back very pleasant long-forgotten memories of that year.
A year before he died on Sep 13th 1996 at age 25.
We youngsters used to look up to him but what does one really know at age 25? Little to nothing. When one listens to the lyrics sasa decades later, unaona tu haguna gitu anasema ya maana. But the beat and memories are nice.
Maisha ni upepo, my frens
Those howling over William Looter and Raira ngweeeeeeh day in day out remind me of dubula dubula (Onyango Oloo) and his heavy political essays. Also gone six feet under after engaging in hopeless politcs his whole life. Very sad.

We still henged, we still enjoyed our post high school years
We loved and lost several fine mamas
We saw every club in Nairobbery that was worth seeing back then. Sadly the famous DJ's of those clubs are mostly gone! A few who remain are long retired grandpas.
We lost a few friends along the way to the coffin
Na maisha iliendelea tu.

The worst ghettos in Los Estados Unidos are all in New Orleans, man, trust me. No comparison to any other kabzaaaaa kabzaa

I remember when the south ran rap for like 5 years non stop (2004 hapo to about 2009) and kina Mike Jones, Slim Thug and Yin Yang Twins were the kings of the South!

Today was just one of those days, brother. Took one serious trip down memory lane with some of these bangers;
How long will they mourn me - friends are dying like flies at our age, man
I miss the era of live performance music videos man (upper 80s to upper 90s)
From today henceforth my new resolution is to count my blessings and make the most of every single second!
juu tomorrow is not promised, man!

Out on the road today
I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice inside my head said
“Don't look back, you can never look back”
I thought I knew what love was, what did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go but...

Very, very sad. Life is but vapor bro. Pele, Kasavuli, the Pope and several more all went during that last week of December. Once you start seeing one's contemporaries dropping like flies it puts everything in perspective. This year has been a sobering one for me.

Inazo was their best hit IMO.
Good one. My faves (from best downwards)
Hawaii
Umlilo never gets old, boss
Summertime. Tira's helicopter ride over Debehn really inspired me to travel back in the 2000's when I first watched this video
Amabenjamin. Those signature grunts to the beat never get old
Sondela (starting minute 2:40). Still looking for the full video - seems like it was a remix.
RIP Nuz.

Good ones. Hawaii and Umlilo especially hit the spot for me. It's easy to forget how they were an institution while they lasted. They had a heavy influence Gqom.

I always say that beauty comes from pain.
Smooth arrangement Vumani Makhosi by Letta Mbulu. Siyajabula :D .

As surely as the sun rises each morning, everything on this planet washes away in the long run, bro. I am getting better at accepting and dealing with this bitter fact each additional year God allows me to tarry on this planet.
Was watching a clip of celebs who died in 2022. Wakina Bob Saget who we used to watch daily GONE!
This joint takes me way back to 1994/5. Days of innocence looking forward to a lifetime ahead. Especially in the land of opportunity! If only we knew that it was far from paradise!
Also reminds me of Asali. We will never get the mid to late 90s back ever again, man.
-
Matchbox 20 - Push. Summer 1997. Crazy summer it was. The OJ case media whirlwind, Princess Di dies, Tony Blair became PM, Tiger Woods youngest ever to win the masters at 21, Biggie was shot dead and so much more.
-
Secada is classic. Matchbox 20 captures that period well. I think Lenny Kravitz is another sound that peaked around that time.
98º - Because Of You is also catchy.

My favourite by far was 3EB. These two songs ruled my tape deck in 1999. Man where did those amazing days (90s college rock) go?
Reminds me of cheap beers, smoke filled bars and uncoordinated jungu college crowd dancings

Breeder LW reminds me of Nonini. Entertaining kiasi
You're right. I hadn't thought of that. Near-identical voices
-
1994. Monster tune back then (an unbelievably-whopping almost-30 years ago!)
-
Timeless classic. Later sampled by Foxy Brown in 1996 in a similarly named song but slightly slowed down (beat) version.
-
2005 was yet another beautiful year for me
Reminds me of my money-obsessed decade (2000 to 2010). These days money means near nada to me beyond providing basic comfort and security for me and my family.
-
Long time since we have shared a Tuku joint hapa. Already 4 years since he died. Haunting vocals. And that nguittar jameni.
Life is short and brutal man. Everyone needs to enjoy each day like it were their last. Everything that seems so important doesn't mean anything when the coffin beckons.

Azania's own Flip Dogg(from Whiteboyz :D ). Sounds like Focalistic kabzaaa. I love the energy.

Tuku was one of those greats. I remember listening to the guy in the 90s(before he was in vogue) and everyone was giving me the eye like I lost it. Another underrated guy is Sibongiseni Shabalala. I saw his performance with Ladysmith Black Mambas over the weekend.
He performs Usenzile with his maskanda spinoff.

Indeed. Tuku's joints are always very relaxing
Imeakataa kucheza. Can't find it on youtube either. Any luck finding another of the same?
-
London beat never gets old. Brings back so many memories for me from the 90's decade. Of my tusupuu ex of that time especially :D. These old songs (and the memories they induce) just get better with time.
-
These song, these song, these song I tells ya reminds me of Vegas
Luda wasn't playing on his verse

Looks like it's not available in your location. You can find it on Spotify. If not, I'll try upload it on YouTube.
Here is the group. The founder Joseph Shabalala passed on 2020. They can all do the indlamu stomping dance(even the 70 years olds) - I am getting there with continued body combat and lap swims.

Indeed. Asante will hunt for it on Spotify.
Awesome tune..wasn't that a Paul Simon joint?
Man all these folks are dropping dead which is very sad. Was watching this juzi. Haunting.
Hehehe at the stomping dance. Jacob Zuma stunned many with his agility some years back while dancing to some Zulu tunes despite being 80 years old! He must piga some serious tizi daily.
Kazi safi hapo. Still a classic to date
-
People forget just how much of a beast Bobby Brown was. Imagine his ego back then. He must have been sailing on top of the world
Now decades after the booze and drugs, he can barely climb up the stairs as time and age has caught up with him.
Hii dunia sii yetu. The fleetingness and vanity of life, man.
Isapite
Epic performance hapa though.
-
New Orleans is one of the most unique places in North America
Heard this song hapo around the mid 2000s and it still brings me lovely memories of the place.
-
These songs just get better with time. This one is 9 years old already.
Whatever happened to Heavy K the Drumboss?
The Amapiano wave seems to have washed him away into oblivion
-
Toes in the sand 2009. I remember listening to this song during the same year (2009) like it were yesterday.
There's just something about Southern music man.
Georgia memories
-
Another smash from 2009
Alaine too has disappeared into oblivion
-
Aint it funny how times slips away (1976)
Same lady same song 2018
-
Another smash from 2009
Alaine too has disappeared into oblivion
Father Time remains undefeated.
Her style reminds me of Brick & Lace.

Yep. Classics. The explosion of Amapiano makes it's hard to stay relevant for old guns...the pressure to jump on the band wagon must be high with MajorLeagueDJs pushing that genre worldwide.

Kazi safi. Very relaxing tune and scenery. Puts me on vacation mode kafsaa and reminds me of this song below! For me it was not summer of 69 but summer of 2010, man. Surf, sand, sun. Those were the best days of my life (so I thought) :D

Nelly ride wit me. The ultimate "look at me now" song Reminds me of my post-grad school early days when I had achieved all my dreams.
400 Ni hayo tu.

This obviously belongs to Shazam or the Musical Interlude but I am in pain.
Can anyone tell me what the first track is in the playlist? I can neither tell the song nor the artist.
Termie? RVHH? "Oldie" seems to be hip-hop & R&B lovie-dovie type.
-
Okk Shazam said in all of 5 seconds this is Online by the very same Limitless and Shockman :93:

Get the f* up Dead Nipate

Kali sana Termie. Prof and his sleepy, call and response gruff chant style is timeless. Not sure if you posted this one yet. Pabi Cooper is FIYA🔥. I predict big things ahead for her in the industry.
-
Focalistic Maradona Khekheleza. Heavy tune. That beat, that beat, that beat I tells ya!

She is good. Though I'd hate to be a musician in that Azania space(staying relevant is a tough chore).
When I saw Breakdance in Olympics it took me back to this.
