CS Kiunjuri vindicates NCPB maize traders
« on: June 07, 2018, 10:08:07 AM »
He is actually saying the small maize farmers were just unlucky :D

Kiunjuri is beside the point. He has not explained how these big time traders were paid almost immediately after "delivering" the maize while a normal farmer would have to wait almost over a year to get paid.
Also why did NCPB give preference to the big maize traders instead of the small traders? What signal is NCPB and Kiunjuri sending to the maize farmers in Kenya?

NCPB should be disbanded. It serve no purpose. Maize can never be strategic commodity. There is enough maize in the global market if we ever ran out of local produce. The rest of this is nonsense because as long as Uganda & TZ border is open and maize is selling for 1200-1800 per bag - while NCPB is buying for 3200- people will buy.

Maize is not a contraband.

End the maize and sugar subsidy now. Save 7-10B and give it to CDF or something else. Privatize NCPB - and let millers buy it - and use it to store and process maize.

NCPB is needed by the big boys because to them it is a minting machine. They are in no hurry to disband this cashcow.
Of course Ruto is deeply involved in this saga as usual and Kiunjuri in the quest to clinch Ruto's DP post in 2022 will do anything to cover him up.

It existed with or without Ruto - I think nobody has the balls to take on North Rift farmers...just like nobody has the balls to take on Western sugar farmers. Ruto doesn't need to work hard, supplying maize and all that - when there are lots of easy money he can get from Chinese contractors. He simply need to lift his phone and get 5-10% of any tender - without sweating.

That he is already doing especially the energy sector like KPC, KPLC and the likes. The problem with Ruto is he is too greedy. Uhuru has cashed in much more than Ruto in the past 6 years, but Ruto is the face of corruption in Kenya today. He should be more tactful and not do stupid and obvious deals like selling maize to NCPB.
NCP's problem is not the local farmer but the big maize dealer who imports maize and get paid within 24 hours of delivery courtesy of a call from DP's office.

Precisely!!. So long as NCPB is artificially setting high maize prices there's always going to be an arbitrage opportunity since maize or sugar  is readily available cheaply across the border or global markets. Most kenyans are maize consumers its  ridiculous for government to punish majority of kenyans to prop up inefficient farmers and traders.

Precisely. I am glad Kiunjuri is the minister - for far too long a maize farmer has been a minister - it time for somebody to tell maize and sugar farmer the truth - they suck!

That a basic economic class. Uganda has surplus maize - that they are selling 1800 -(mostly from demand from kenya) -TZ 1200 coz they banned imports - maize globally is so dirty cheap - same with sugar - the probelm is OUR FARMERS - NOT the traders! Our farmers should produce maize so competitive - it doesn't matter who buys them. But of course unless they sell to NCPB for 3200 - they won't break even.

What input cost - the maize in uganda is grown in eastern uganda - maize in kenya in western kenya - the only difference is a "border" - if Uganda can produce maize at 1200 - kenya farmers should be able to match them - and if not - please plant avacados or dairy or something that is more higher yielding.

For example - most of maize in uganda you find grown by Uganda kalenjin in Sabiny districts - and accross the border - it the same kalenjin growing it in Kitale.

Why is that Ugandans can produce maize so cheaply and we are crying for gok to subsidize each farmer with lots of money!
