Ruto government proposes wealth tax for car owners
« on: September 13, 2023, 10:47:35 AM »
It is as if having a car in Kenya means you are wealthy. Car owners already pay a lot of taxes. Fuel levy and raod taxes are already in place. Why burden the car owners more when the government has yet to show any signs that it is ready to reduce on spending on its side?

They want to tax everything. Yet you find guys cheering KK government on, promising all and sundry that Kenya will overtake SA in under 10 years  :o. A country cannot industrialise by inveessantly taxing and raising tax on anything and everything. The result: a population with very little disposable income to spend on anything. The would be investors will also shy away and hope for countries with friendly tax regimes.

Not every tax is a bad thing. Nothing wrong with property tax as long as service is provided.  Car tax should be there annually calculated on book value. They should go ahead and add annual number plate renewal fee so they track the number of automobile on kenyan road. We are spending alot on Roads so car owners should bear majority cost.

most property owners dont pay tax. Use the tax to upgrade colonial building in schools.   Even 1k a year is something.

Kenya pays very little taxes compared to advanced countries, especially the US. I can breakdown the taxes I pay until you breakdown. My dog insurance is $39 a month with $18 dollars attached to it. Cars have annual tax, with city and county taxes attached. Home/property taxes in the same way. Water bill, electricty, phone bill, water bill, Gas bill, Internet bill, and all the consumer foods are all have taxes attached to it. Petrol has state and federal taxes and the list goes on. There is nothing you touch or use in the US that is not taxed and enforced, and yes, You can never escape taxes here EVER. They are a must like air you breath. When someone is dead and before the body is realeased at the morgue, government (local, state, and federal) stipulates that all outstanding taxes or debts be settled before flafgging of the body for burial. That is how ruthless these advanced countries on tax collection. If they were to institute such and collect money from every Kenyan the same way USA does, Kenya would be collecting extra 5 trillion shillings a year on the low end. Even Mursik (butter milk) I buy have few coins going to state! They are vicious! Not to mention stocks shares I buy and sell in bulk daily! You pay taxes here 24/7 360. US should be named Taxville, or Taxburg! Taxes and prudent use make the country grow and advance. Kenya is collecting less and probably mismanaged by those in charge, and that, my friends explains anemic growth over the years! When things work, and everything runs like a clockwork, folks don't mind paying taxes. One of the things I love doing is paying US taxes! It is great a hobby!

Now you are comparing Kenya, a 3rd world corrupt country with USA? So when will Kenya overtake the USA  according to your projections? You want Kenyans to be taxed like its happening in the States? My friend. You cannot walk without crawling. Compare Kenya with her peers.  By the way, did you know that the Singapore industrialisation minister committed suicide on learning that he was suspected to have been involved in a graft case? Yes, such country where there is rule of law can move forward economically in leaps and bounds. Not corrupt to the neck Kenya.

I didn't know Ruto will be this clueless, raising taxes in a poor country like kenya where siphoning is order of the day and the taxes will never be used properly will never work
More taxes=More money stolen.
Ruto is set to fail.

Ruto does not seem concerned about closing the loopholes for stealing tax payers money. He has appointed his clansmen in every importnt ministry. I think his credo is to let "his people" catch up with the Kikuyu elite.

Yes it is madness. The feedback on fuel VAT being raised from 8% to 16% shows there is over taxation. I think equivalent of VAT in the US is around 5%.

Worse is that the taxes are for paying for stolen debts as the thieves roam around. There is no sewerage, water, yet we are paying. Electricity is heck expensive yet we are paying for the loans which were meant to make it cheaper. SGR is still born yet we are paying for it.

1) Kenyans earn less americans but they pay more for fuel electricity and most basic necessities.

2)  The overtaxed money in Kenya is shared by a few politicians judges and security men while in developed countries, money is distributed to the lowest person.

3) After overtaxation and looting of the taxed money,Kenyans dont have welfare,if you dont have money for food or health you die,in developed countries you are given food and health policies by gov.

Corrupt nations like kenya develop through violent revolutions to make sure nobody benefits from stolen public funds,at that point is when nation building begins. Otherwise The only thing that can help kenyans is death because nobody will tax their dead bodies or arrest corpses at city mortuary. The amount of overtaxation, commodity inflation through organised political cartels and looting of public funds is dehumanizing.

I hear from reliable sources that the eating being witnessed now is at a level never seen before. People are actually shocked at the new level of eating and impunity. I used to be extremely bothered by this stuff but I am at home and settled to the fact that the country will never change and we are going to be a shithole for centuries.

Even the Eurobonds we are to pay dearly cannot be explained where they went to. How do you expect the people to pay taxes willingly when they know a lot of it lands in private pockets?

Two different tax systems. AMERICAN TAX SYTEM is progressive system. While kenya system is almost flat tax for majority of goods and services..aka vat..the vat tax is negatively impacts the poor. In America stated like PA have flat tax and it is a really bad tax system.
On property taxes especially on vehicles..it is a bad idea unless it is to cover a specific cost such the inspection, registration of the vehicles. Only poor states like weet Virginia have property taxes.

The guy to pay attention to is david Ndii and he is not budging.

I don't know how you take a poverty stricken country like kenya into middle income status? is it through taxation or are there other ways?

How did countries like Malaysia and Indonesia get to middle income status?

A good theory that has left two classes of america since reagan. Taxes have to be fair accross the board, otherwise oligarchy will prevail.
