The challenge to the kenya dairy sector is animal feed...hay,grains,water etc....If the farmer can acess animal feed at a better price,it means increase in profit margins...nobody is forced to sell milk to Brookside..There are so many milk processors in kenya today,county cooperatives private enterprises etc...this money will end up in people pockets.

Again,stop making stupid posts...blood idiot.

With the rains farmers will have two harvests of silage. The past few drought years have taught farmers to be serious.

KCC is needed in glut times to convert milk to powder and check Brookside evil of lowering prices at will.

Everyone knows Brookside gameplan of buying off all competitors - and stalling KCC - no better than Mwangi wa Iria.

The days when I peddled milk to the local coop which in turn peddled it to the local creamery are long gone.
KCC was a farmer's choice that was killed by Moi.
Reviving it will be a miracle.

How?

Which milk do you want to store the milk when there is a milk deficit?

Will KCC invest in providing animal feeds and from.which source?  Do we produce enough hay and seed cake from cotton sunflower etc from.our farmers?

Will KCC buy milk from farmers at a higher price than brookside which controls 40 % market?

wacha ujinga wewe.

We used to buy everything from KFA and our COOP account was linked to KFA, then Moi came to power.
THe starvation that followed.....
Only A firm foundation can revive the framework of KCC. Pouring money wont.

Goverment no longer runs business through capital injections but mostly though policy and regulations in the modern day.

The challenge of the kenyan dairy farmer today is animal.feed

Many places like Maasailand - kajiado/narok/west pokot/samburu/laikipia/ etc - where farmers with 1 or 2 litre of extra milk - can aggregate. Private investor cannot do the hardwork of aggregation when they can import powder milk and dose it with water like brookside or go to ruiru - and get tonnes of milk.

It gov job to provide them coolers - and help them form coops - supply KCC - and they will transform their lives.

That is why Ruto want to give them 700 coolers - so they can aggregate their milk - and sell - and grow out of poverty. Uhuru kenyatta Brookside gameplan was to corner the market and create a monopoly. Short term selfish move. Not to expand the pie and get huge pie of 6 billion of unprocessed milk.

These maasai women of Kajiado are doing great - and west pokot too

Do they get 1 liter during drought of 2 years?
Solution is animal feed. Having coolers without animal feed is a scam.

You can't animal feed poor breed of cattle. Those drought resistant cows will spend all the food in regulating their temperature..not milk production.The solution is to tap already 5b litres of unprocessed milk.India does this...with useless cows...

How do you harvest milk from pastoralists? These people travel hundreds of kilometers to look for feeds from their animals...If KMC has been unable to deal with meat,you think it will deal with milk?..GOK should build mega dams in Arid areas and partner with the entire value chain from large grain plantations,cold storages for both beef and milk coolers.

A good example is Mwea,The Thiba dam supplies water to  rice farmers, they harvest the rice bran and use it to feed their animals or Narok farmers who plant wheat to harvest bran and feed it to their cattle.

Otherwise, How will milk a pastoralist avoid his way of life of grazing a hundred cattle which he can sell for 15000 each and leave all that for a liter of 15 litres of milk worth 600 in an area without grass for his cattle.

LASTLY, The consumption of processed milk will be driven by urbanization because its not possible to keep cattle producing milk in Kasarani or Ruaka.That means as more people leave rural areas for urban areas, they will abandon their way of life and choose to consume processed milk out of necessity.The demand curve of processed milk,cheese,butter can be properly correlated with urbanization.

The biggest beneficiary of consumption of unprocessed milk is the citizens because its cheap and dont pay taxes to a corupt gov.The loacl hotels  and households in rural areas and urban settlements benefit alot from unprocessed milk..1 litre of Processed milk per costs 120,Unprocessed milk per litre costs about 70,Citizens benefit.

Government should avoid interventionist projects meant to siphon money and focus on the COMPLETE VALUE CHAIN.

Again we already produce the milk;
Lot of it probably going to waste or not earning farmers moeny;
We have export market;
That is why coolers are important;
No long stories about animal feeds;
No long stories about dams;
There is milk in those manyattas that people would like to sell and make money too;
All they need is coolers and cooperative to aggregate them;

There is milk in those manyattas that people would like to sell and make money too;
All they need is coolers and cooperative to aggregate them;

1) How many manyattas do we have?

2) How many cow producing milk are in those manyattas and how much milk do they produce?

3) What is the cost of sustaining a cooler in those areas? Population distribution of milk suppliers?

4) How will  the cooler harvest the milk in those areas?

Nonsense as usual.
We have 6 billion milk out there - only processing less than a billion.
So there is milk - that could be earning farmers who produce little milk money.
All they need is coolers - cooperatives.
Coolers dont have to be in every manyatta - just motor bike or bike away.
Motor bike can collect 1-2 extra litres per day from every farmer - put them in jar and take them cooler- this milk now that is converted into Mursik by pastoralist.
Within two days farmers have accumulated maybe 1,000 litres - KCC truck comes and take the milk.
The farmers co-op will run the coolers - and deduct small money for electricity and rent.
Slowly these farmers will improve their breeds - now they can see regular income.
Most of cows now produce milk - btw march/april to october - everywhere is green - cows well feed - enough drinking water.
KCC should collect all excess milk - convert them into powder.
Then come dry season - add water - and sell.
