Withdrawal as a solution to insecurity is no longer an option. That expired the day Al Shabaab decided to relocate to NEP and make it a base.
Measures need to be taken to train more GSU and give police paramilitary training for deployment in NEP, Eastern and a buffer around Central. KDF should be sent back to the barracks as soon as possible and removed and excluded from internal security matters. If not, you can count on a coup within the next 5 years.
Here are the usual stages:
1. Military inserts itself in internal security
2. Suffers defeat due to long standing deficiencies brought on by corruption, bad equipment, lethargy and the fact that the elite started looking at the military as "job" for their kids and never envisaged war;
3. Recriminations between the civilian leadership and the corrupt high command
4. Pre-emptive action either by the High Command or the civilian government. One wins and if not
5. Civil war with the so called national military disintegrating in to small factions
6. Average length of civil war in Africa - 20 years (and rising)
The war in somalia is complete failure. The sooner we withdraw from somalia the better. We went there in hot pursuit..now alshabab have made kenya their playground.
Tourism is now as dead as dodo..and yet we ran to somalia to save tourism.
