I don't think rules are broken here. The boys are in 2nd stage - where they are allowed to out there- in the forests and shrubs- but their faces are hidden- you can get close to you mother - but generally you're hidden.

The first stage is where is ILLEGAL - that is first 1-2 weeks when initiates are still healing, wear blankets and smear their faces with porridge - if you enter MTC - there is NO coming BACK - you'll get circusmized there and then - at your own fee - and if you're cut but didn't go through MTC - you'll start your 5 weeks journey - even if you're 50yrs. Some two idiotic boys a week after we had been in - sneaked into another MTC - and they ended delaying us for a week - as we had to wait for them to heal. Generally MTC is guarded 24hrs during that period. Man that was the worst - you smear you face with porridge for 2 weeks . Then red orchid and white clay for remainder....then layers of butter and oil for last stages.

Kalenjin also strictly around that time - start from october till december - never in august. Normally as soon as the school closes - it starts. Prep work start maybe September - I remember with two friends - we built that house in the forest that would house - it was a lot of work - bringing all the trees, thatch and the work - only on the last day - did we get assisted to erect and thatch it. Then we had to fetch a mountain of firewood - fire never goes out in MTC - so you have to stock a lot of firewood - these are huge logs - one can last two days - and it's fulltime job to keep fire burning - someone has to watch it - duty roster - we dug a small toilet - path to our water source - name it. Then as it near - you're suppose to practise singing - every evening - girls during our time where going through MTC - and they did practise - with colombus monkey dressing and lots of vuvuzela. I remember across our MTC - and the river -was a girl MTC - girls MTC are attached to house - kitchen - but they use to generally go through the same process - albeit done 3 times.The highlight was the night of cutting the clitoris - men were allowed or would bulldoze their way in - although women generally kept theirs secret too. I never went one - but i was told - naked women had their clitoris - would be smeared with maize flour - and they got teased a lot - before the final cutting (

The day of graduation - you wear a full skin regalia - for two days - man that was worse - and you hid your face like a muslim woman.


A day after - you remove the Hijab - and remained with head gear



Every week we wore different type of skins The fun part is thanks I think to fire and all the stories people use to tell us about women - you'd erect you penis - and you had to beat your ankle so hard - or is it knuckle - so we had a stick we stayed with. There was fun parts - archery, making weapons, raiding other MTCs,etc. Raiding another MTC was toughest - you had to catch them unaware like early morning around 3 am - and as soon as you crossed one bow - on their MTC - it was gameshot - you'd stay and eat their breakfast.

Its quite similar to Meru very interesting, possible because we inherited some of it from Nilotes samburu/maa. Myself during our time they fed you enormous food you had to eat served in a basin and porridge was brought in a jug or thermos if you vomit they would force you to eat the vomit many ntaane (initiates) died in the gaalos(initiates hut) you would be beaten senseless for failing a specific task. They used to call you DC  because they say kitambo an initiate was equivalent of him nowadays ntaanes are called county commissioners during their marching out from gaalos and the camps ngoromos(newly initiated) they are paraded and walked along the roads traffic has to stop and give way if you dare do otherwise motorist are beaten sensless by the armed escorts . They are escorted by their rwigis and bamos(equivalent of seargent major and their caretaker respectively) women sing from afar as the ngoromos walk, they are briefed on the following 3 main doctrines of  nthaka(Warrior)
1. Utii muciuguro-No looking back
2. Utii mucoko- No turning back
3. Utiu ciiji- They know nothing apart from taking orders
The ngoromos are equivalents to GSU recruits as per my observation hardened and belligerent. Further more girls go crazy after you, but you are warned by your bamo or rwigi not to try any sexual contact for 6 months otherwise you will tanuka, so we bid our time but it was lovely past 6 months you got all the ngaos you could have
