Ethiopia has big problems- despite real federalism complete with security control. If they were not so divided they would have long made it as African giant.

Ethiopia has been at war for the last 3 years. Rebels have been advancing against govt. Ethiopians havent been going home for fear of being attacked. One of my friends can't even risk to go see her ailing mother in Addis. She escaped Tigray crackdown of the 1980s. She has very hallowing stories of being detained and hearing her fellow detainees being executed outside one by one. She just happened to have been dating an Airforce pilot who used his military connections to get her freed.

Obama had made a deal with all Zenenawi cronies to leave the country and let abiby rule in peace. They cleaned the coffers and took all the Forex before Abiby was appointed. At that point Oromos were knocking door close to the Addis.

Ethiopia countryside is under rebels control. The problem is that the govt there controls information better than most countries. They are second to North Korea in information control

Need for Democrats to come back. Isolationist policy by Trump will make shithole countries sink especially in corona aftermath.

Ethiopia has millions of unemployed youth masses. Millions and millions and then you bring in guns!

Sad.  Most of these wars are just about national and ethnic pride.  A flag; a 21 gun salute; a national anthem; a military parade showing off WW2 weapons.  Even if people are starving, you can't mess with us kind of attitude.

I agree Trump's disengaged and diplomatically weakened America has opened the doors to some things like this.  Previously they could have just put in a call or two to sort it out.  Now, nobody even pays attention.

Ethiopia will be fine; it's like the US; everyone has a gun; it either goes somali way or it's end quickly.

Meles biggest mistake was to elevate his 5% against really entrenched centuries old amhara rule.

Before that Mengistu has led a Hustler Revolution that kick all the dynasties out. Most dynasties who are out in diaspora really hate Mengistu for that..My friend told me his grandfather who was dying of cancer lived for a few months when he heard Mengistu had been toppled. Mengistu after getting power had redistribute his land and wealth.

Mengistu led a hustler revolution - DERG - and really kicked the rich. He should still be in Harere under protection by Zimbwabwe.

Meles was part of that revolution I think - that send Haile Saileissse and is chiwawa out.

Now the Nobel Laurate - 40yr old empty propaganda Mutua COBRA squad - - clealry cannot run Ethiopia.

He has the sound bites, he has the majority Oromos, and that is pretty much it.

He lacks WISDOM.

Wasn't Mengistu overthrown by Abiy rebels led by Zenawi? Followed swiftly by Eritrea secession.

:) lol. Abiy rebels; Abiy is 40 somethingyr old; our agemate.

Before Mengistu - Ethiopia was a monarchy - Amhara monarchy - run by king - Haile was the last one - he was King who run other small ethiopean Kings - a king of kings.

Mengistu a junior army led DERG - hustler revolution against the kings and their protege.

They adopted marxism or communism - and redistributed wealth or poverty. Think China MAO. A purge on the rich. That brought poverty like happen everywehre from China, Zim and name it - as new land or property owners have no clue.

Out of that poverty it's led to Great Famine. Think China in Mao era. Mengistu marxism or Huslter revolution had backfired and now everyone was more poorer and actually dying from it.

And out of that desperation - arose Meles Zenawi - medical student who left to join forces to fight Derg.

Meles was like China's Xiaping. Adopting some capitalism while keeping a core communist society.

The model worked.

He died from cancer - and cookie start to crumble. Not so fast. They picked a small tribe guy - from Gambela - and he become PM.

OROMOs and Amhara start to merge. Oromo have smelt blood..they want Adis and everyone out...they are like Kalenjin/nilotic owning Nairobi -

The proxy Gambela and Tigray - picks a 40yr old IT engineer in the army to become PM.

And that is Abbiy.

Ethiopia is really Amhara, Tigrays and Oromo - with Somali distant 4th. Tigrays are cousins to Eritreas - and more caucasian therefore don't want to be under Amhara - who also don't want to be under Oromo/Somali - who also don't want to be under Southern Nations.

Tigray-Amhra -speak a semitic language - more like jews/arabs. Oromo/Somalis speak cushistic - more africa - kalenjin mixed with arabic/semitic

And that is the hierarchy... a racial fight.

With Egypt/US on the neck of Addis over The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam such conflicts can easily take a life of their own.

Can't understand Egypt's opposition when even lake Turkana is flooded.
