One of my friends can't even risk to go see her ailing mother in Addis. She escaped Tigray crackdown of the 1980s. She just happened to have been dating an Airforce pilot who used his military connections to get her freed.

Sad.  Most of these wars are just about national and ethnic pride.  A flag; a 21 gun salute; a national anthem; a military parade showing off WW2 weapons.  Even if people are starving, you can't mess with us kind of attitude.

Before Mengistu - Ethiopia was a monarchy - Amhara monarchy - run by king - Haile was the last one - he was King who run other small ethiopean Kings - a king of kings.

Mengistu a junior army led DERG - hustler revolution against the kings and their protege.
