30yr civil war has destroyed them. But they still eke out a living from Dadaab and graduate to Eastleigh. Buy illegal papers from Nyayo House and compete. That lot of hoops to jump. Last I noticed they run Luthuli Avenue? - the Nairobi wall street :) - seem they kicked even mhindi out of electronics.

I think urbanize Somalis might give wrong impression otherwise when someone visit their home - it's turkana like mess - it's semi arid if not arid places - somalis have houses like those built by kids - just shrubs.
Envy is human nature - even here Trump is throwing tamtrums over Huawei sijui national security and all excuses to defeat fair competition. Kyuks are hated much more by non-Gema - esp Luo being so ambitious, pompous but incompetent really loathe the shrewd, frugal Kikuyu for it. Somali if Siad Barre and Farra Aidid didn't mess up - Mogadishu might be EA powerhouse by now eclipsing Nairobi.

Kenyan Somali headcount has also been underestimated for a long time - with Kikuyu count padded- so the recent correction starting with Ligare cause all the whining from Kikuyu. If you consider historical & geography advantages, and political favoritism - Kikuyu, Kalenjin, Luo would suffer. These big tribes that dominate central GoK should let the ASALs keep current formula that favor them.

Interesting, Yes, in terms of hustling, kikuyus, somalis and bahindis have it. Gusii are coming up - but mostly transport and real estate sector. The other kabilas are just not yet there. Kalenjin are into trucking and farming - at micro-level - although the Moi elite have big business... For example, Jack chebett, Stabex, run Uganda petrol, his petrol stations are anywhere close to 100...but at mirco-level..not there.
On fuel business, Go to Pipeline depot in Nairobi, this is where you find fuel hustlers. These people started of milking trucks and adulterating fuel with paraffin. Some of them have graduated to owning multinational branded petrol stations. Most of all this people hail from Muranga thanks to their original Godfather Thayu(Astrol).  Yes Somalis have serious marketshare in the fuel business but so do kikuyus. The difference is kikuyus are more operating individually while Somalis invest more as a group.  Most of the outlets selling clothes in Nairobi are kiuk owned and they import from china, turkey etc via Eastleign. On eateries the likes of kilimnjaro , the somalis have overpaid for those outlets and the only people who frequent those restaurants are somalis. The point is somalis are doing well but not at the expense of other tribes. The market changed and expanded where other tribes also have their marketshare.

Stick to the objects. Of course I mean "entrepreneur" Mwafrika version - not Elon Musk. Noone really builds anything in Kenya - even the mhindi "manufacturers" just produce shoes, tissue, pens. Small stuff - in slave sweatshops while evading taxes. But Kikuyu at least aggressively top most of these low-grade business - leveraging savings, loans, saccos, and of course loot or abuse of power.

Even Elon Musk's is a fake hustle supported with government money. Tesla has never been in profit.

Btw, when did Amazon first make a profit since it was grounded by Jeff Bezos in 1994?

Can you afford to run a business for 20 years without breaking in profit? Impossible.

Tesla is bankrolled by credit from money created by the FED that is backed by air, nothing.

Tesla was grounded in 2003. The company is not 20 years old.
You will swallow your words very soon just like the other big car makers like Mercedes have realised the car manufacturing business has moved. Everyone is now chasing Tesla and trying to catch up.

There is a lot of hype and marketing surrounding Tesla and electric cars in general. I'm not convinced they are the future.

The future will be walkable cities, mixed used residential and occupational buildings - so one doesn't have to commute to work or shop, low energy as opposed to high energy model we have now.

Time will tell.

I also don't buy the Somali piracy capital story. It just envy. These guys the few I have known are very savvy in business - like mhindi. The risk- taking or "fearless" venturism - aka ambition - also drives the Kikuyus. Even housegirl will steal from you pole pole and save 50% of meagre income in sacco. Kikuyus have Somali and mhindi drive but abit lack the savvy. Ultimately Somali are better than Kikuyu in hustle. Mhindi beat them both.

The jealousy and tantrums tell you the pecking order. How do Chinese fare in this micro-level hustle mix?

I think that is where we go wrong. Somalis don't have it easy. They work hard, they save money, they cooperate and name. That is why they dominate all the way down to south africa. The most important thing somalis have is NO FEAR. Where nobody goes - Somali will. I was in trucking business - and there are jobs reserved for Somalis because the are dare devils. As long as they have enough miraa - they are good to go.

That aspect of risk taking is what makes Somalis tick.

I can say 90% of Kikuyu business /start up is legit as opposed to Somali 60%.
Most kikuyu have honestly worked hard somalis you cant really say so origin of their money is questionable plus laundering not forgetting that most money you see with somalis is proceeds from the republic of Somali what somalia would have been collecting as taxes etc ends up in eastleigh and other areas

Well its a known fact that you are one unrealistic lady - You still think Raila is going to be president in 2022

Below is a sneek preview of piracy and the money it generated during Kibaki era . Notice a large proceed goes to the sponsors abroad meaning Kenya

https://www.chathamhouse.org/sites/default/files/public/Research/Africa/0112pp_shortland.pdf

Quote
Ransoms for single pirate hijacks ranged from US$690,000 to US$3 million in 2008 but climbed to a record US$9 million in 2010. The amount of ransom paid is often kept a commercial secret, and
so estimates of the total income from piracy in Somalia vary widely, and are mostly vastly inflated.
About US$40 million was paid in ransoms in 2008.8

A realistic figure for 2009 is in the region of US$70 million.9

To put this into context, the official government budget of Puntland in 2008 was US$11.7 million and in 2009 was US$17.6 million.10 Cattle exports from Somalia in 2009 were
worth US$43 million.11 The amount of foreign exchange and income generated by piracy is potentially a large proportion of Puntland’s GDP.

In 2008, the United Nations (UN) estimated that 40 per cent of the proceeds of piracy directly funds local employment. Of this, 30 per cent goes to the pirate crew, and those involved in land-side
operations receive 10 per cent. According to the report, a further 10 per cent of revenue is paid in gifts and bribes to the local community, while the remaining 50 per cent is paid to the financiers and
sponsors of the pirates, who may be based abroad. If all revenue from piracy was invested or spent locally, it could have a transformative effect on deprived coastal communities.
