I just saw an expert explain that this used to be problem in low altitude areas like eastern but due to climate change it is now a problem in riftvalley and western. I believe I was exposed to this toxins while living in kenya. I haven't had ugali in years

One wonders why KEBS gives such a notice to the public and yet the unga unfit for human consumption is still being sold in the supermarkets.

I think we had Kenya Food Safety Authority. It appears to me KEBS is overwhelmed dealing with all sorts of standards.

Kebs has fulfilled its mandate on this case. It now up to other agencies to ensure these orders are carried out

Some people are saying KEBS is in the hands of maize acrtels who are out to discredit the local maize which will then open for them doors for more maize importation.
Others say the poorn storge of maize is intentional to get it declared for human consumption and then more maize has to be imported.

The tests are credible. .kebs was just preemptin dn story. Since maize importation has been banned it seems consumers have been left with no option but consume local stock that according to manufacturers is not fit for human consumption.

This should be a ministry of Health mandate not KEBS.

Yes - and they should make it criminal or having very heavy penalty - on stuff that affect human safety.

The maize from Uganda has a huge problem with the constant rainfall even during harvesting. The aflotoxin issue is made worse by fact that contaminated maize is used as animal feed thus aflotoxin presence in milk and meats. The cycle continues once the manure from these animals is used for planting.

Not to downplay a problem.  But if you look too closely at any food even here in the states you will find something wrong with it.  Something that might even be associated with ultimate mortality.  I think we need to monitor our food closely.  But we can't be too cute about it by trying to mimmick some western standards.  People have grown up just fine who used to eat soil and stuff.

I did learn that there is a chemical farmers can apply when maize is flowering and before harvest to reduce aflatoxins.. .

I think manure is safe to use. Aflatoxins are not absorbed by plants in that sense.

Aflatoxins sounds bad but is it something new?  I wonder what role it plays in the cancer problem.
