Do we need the Senate?
« on: July 10, 2019, 11:21:12 AM »
Naivasha Draft participants were scared of a strong Senate overseeing National Assembly so they watered it down but still retained it. We should either empower or scrap it.

During 2010-12 implementation, MPs messed with Senate powers. Very short sighted. It was basically Orengo, Kiraitu, Nyong'o and ilk. Two short years later they were back as senators whining about powerlessness.

Obviously Senate should be the upper chamber doing all the vetting of judges, CS's, foreign treaties, etc - under presidential system. National Assembly handles money bills.

Under parliamentary, if we go full federal, Senate should be scrapped. PM and Exec are members of National Assembly so Senate become moribund like UK House of Lords - who double as supreme court to kill time. I think in UK it full of dukes, counts, earls and all such nobles or "lords".

I find how the senate in Kenya works extremely weird.  Especially how it seems to pock its nose in county affairs.  Seemingly usurping the role of MCAs.  I think it should be quietly shelved as a failed experiment.

A big waste of money. The experiment has been done and the results are out. Its useless. Lets scrap it.

Problem is those in power are not for full devolution. his makes the Senate a joke. Senators have nothing to do apart from harassing sitting governors. Checking the county goverments is the work of MCAs just like the national goverment is checked by parliament.
