Pundit, on your position regarding the Mau
« on: September 26, 2014, 11:45:32 AM »
What will you do if it's determined that evictions are the only way to conserve the forest? Do you think that other communities who rely on the waters that have their source in the Mau should have a say in what happens to it, ama this is just the property of the relevant county tu? Plus, seeing as the Mara is property of Kenya and is dependent on it, doesn't everyone have a stake in it?
Just my 0.02 Kshs. wave  ;)

Gov has eminent domain to evict anybody any day of course with fair compensation. Once a forest have been alienated into private farms...the only way to reverse that...is 1) proof fraud 2) acquire it compulsorily.

If the forest is important..then gov should do more to incentive those living there to protect it.

Maasai are getting billions from Maasia Mara and they are protecting animals.

What are people upstream getting for protecting Mau?

Regarding ownership of forested Mau...it belongs to counties as community land...or trustland. Gov can acquire it to become Public LAND GOV LAND..by buying it off from those communities.

What are the chances of Arap Nyayo tea factory smack in the middle of Mau ever being repossessed by GOK (80,000 acres)

This is an inconvenient question for Pundito.  He'd want to nyakua everything..... Please note that their dear leader WSR subscribes to the school of thought that strongly believes that... "Rain comes from the sky not forests!".

Deal with facts. Everyone has their views but facts are sacred.

Fact is Moi abused his powers as a president and destroyed the forest by allocating it to greedy folk that could not see nor appreciate the importance of the forest catchment areas.  "Rain comes from the sky not forests!" Indeed....lol

Fact is moi was allocated Mau by Narok county way back in 1975 before he became PORK...to save Mau by planting tea around it. Moi planted tea which is still a forest...far better in my view than bamboo originally there. Second fact is WB recommended and financed the settling Okieks and other illegal forest dwellers...and excision was done legally. Some people challenged it to high court back in 90s and 2000s and their case was dismissed. There were problem with some allocations going to who is who...but essentially thousands of peasants were settled.Moi did a lot to protect our forest. Including planting tea zones around the forests all over kenya that essentially ended encroaching of forest..only parts of Mau that were not ring fenced with tea zones continue to encounter encroachment. Moi undertook massive tree planting all over kenya.

Moi evicted forest dwellers nearly every yr in tenure...who'd come back again and again..until WB advised him to excise part of the forest and solve the issues once and for all. This was done in Mau, Tinderet forest, Laikipia, Marakwet, Mt kenya forest and nearly all forest in Kenya.

I believe Moi would have safeguarded Mau...more than anyone else because understood the issues..after many yrs grappling with it.For instance Ogiek are natural forest dwellers..they basically own the forest, live there hunting and foraging...how do you deal with that?

Moi deserved a nobel for his conservation activities..not condemnation.

The guy who said "rain doesn't come from trees" is my neighbour in mau..he has many parcels all with trees..albeit fast maturing bluegum--well sucking all the water if you believe some pseudo scientist. Mau is essential the source of rivers mainly because of it's altitude in Mau escarpment...not the forest...so is mt elgon..mt kenya..taita hills..cherangay hills..marakwet hills..ngong hills..aberderes ranges..ethiopian highland.

Even if you plant a brand new forest in low plain of area..rivers will not emerge. Something about water tables..and bla de bla..not pseudo science about forest attracting rainfall..relief rainfall..when you have leeward side that never receive rainfall however attractive the forest there.

Fact is Moi abused his powers as a president and destroyed the forest by allocating it to greedy folk that could not see nor appreciate the importance of the forest catchment areas.  "Rain comes from the sky not forests!" Indeed....lol

So now we realize Mau forest should be or should have been sacred land left alone for all the reasons above...and when Raila tried to tell you, he became enemy number one. Bure kabisa. Pundit who up until recently could not see past the two acres he grabbed  :) (not my words) is being lukewarm about this issue that remains a hot potato.

You're reading double. Raila tried to simplify a complicated and complex issues..Raila should not utter Mau because he clearly doesn't understand the issues involved and so should you. I suggest you restrict yourself to issues you know...say hacinith in lake victoria which is a bigger problem than Mau.
