With optimistic Bett putting the expected grains harvest at 70-75% while we are staring at total crop failure due to erratic rains and the army worm, there is urgent need to find a way to reach the vulnerable across the country in the next six months and into the future.

The big millers have completely sabotaged the initiative and am not sure the posho mill guys will make it work.

- The cash transfer programmes can offer some lessons but given we are dealing with massive food requirements involving large amounts of food supplies to nearly 2 million rural households.

- Primary schools could be a workable where kids get a kilo or two of maize and pulses. Staffroom politics will act as an accountability mechanism.

-The chiefs and assistants are as corrupt as the rest of us but with phone cameras and politicians walking around they can also help.

Market intervention is only way out. Allow free import of maize early
