Power must be too sweet.  People hang onto it, in preference for an opulent retirement where they can enjoy their loot, even when the odds are so obviously stacked against them.

An excellent book on power that I strongly recommend:  https://www.amazon.ca/Lust-Power-Study-Misuse/dp/1608990052/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1484835257&sr=1-1&keywords=lust+for+power

Among other things, Haroutunian explains how there is nothing sweeter than to be in a position where one can stick it to other people as much as and however one likes ... at least for some people.     That riches, opulence, etc.  cannot compete with that feeling.   It's a very insightful book.

I'll check it out.  Obviously this guy is willing to risk being killed or locked up in prison to voluntarily stepping down.

Isn't that always the case with the "great" ones---Saddam, Gadaffi, Haile Selassie, etc.   Power seems to be, as one might say, something else.    Henry Kissinger (in)famously claimed that it is the ultimate aphrodisiac.
