Not cheap. I have seen 12(kshs)/0.12 cent usd per kwh.hydro at 3shs - is 4 times cheaper. Coal can even go lower at 1-2 shs.

But proposed Amu coal is going to cost ksh.7.52....on the higher side.

From about 2010/2011, there have been all sorts of stories on how coal mining would soon start there---by July this year, or September that year, etc.   The reality is that this is Kenya, and apparently money can be made from coal without digging even an inch into the ground.    Numerous "amusing" stories have appeared in the media in the last few years.   Here's one from 2012:

As to what would actually be done with Kenya's coal, if the briefcase types ever got someone to actually mine anything ... who knows.   Perhaps this might give some idea:

The cost of coal power is on paper far cheaper than wind power but when you calculate the envirometal consequences then wind power is much more cheaper. Coal power is on the decline in industrial countries but maybe now Donald Trump will try bring it back, but on the long run it has no chance.

I think coal is a necessary evil. Its a stepping stone before green energy can be afforded.

That reminds me that we were told in 2013 SGR has to be first diesel till some time later. Now we are told an upgrade to electric will cost 50B Ksh alone from Mombasa to Nairobi. Cheap things always turnout to be more expensive.

who is funding these knuckle head energy projects in kenya.. Is Japan still parking her pension funds in Energy sector milking us with hydro and geothermal nonsense. in 1995 I met a young Chinese engineer who had a Japanese citizenship that had made millions at age of 22 in Naivasha as an engineer.. my friend dad who was a senior engineer in olkaria was making a third of young brats like this girl made. he was training them .. but part of conditions for loans from China and Japan they had to hire these "experts" and pay them very high salaries. Is Eddy Njoroge still catwalking his way to Zillionaire status? kenya is fucked up really messed up..

The girl was very sympathetic of Kenyans.. She could understand why I didnt have a job like her.. She was leaving On work study program to US and so we met in old embassy building as I was on my way out of the freaking hell hole ..
