I think they knew their game was up when the US refused to take their side.  The rest of the military simply took the cue and changed course.

The Turkish leader has become a dictator, who is more like Saddam. He is in the process of purging every govt institution of any moderate and bring in Islamists. Watch what will happen after this coup....

I seriously doubt this was a real coup. Seems more likely it was organized by Erdogan himself, to endear himself and gain more power. There are already some questions being asked:

Quote
We don't have to remind readers that when military coups take place in the middle-east, they are i) ruthless, ii) extremely well-organized and planned, and iii) succeed on virtually every occasion. But not this one. The question why is what the media (or at least its fringes) will be pondering over the next few days and weeks.

...........

However, the real punchline was revealed moments ago when Anadolu said a top body overseeing judges and prosecutors has dismissed 2,745 judges across the country. Anadolu Agency says the emergency meeting of the Judges and Prosecutors High Council was held Saturday, mere hours after Turkish forces quashed an attempted coup, and promptly purged the slate clean of anyone in the judicial branch who was seen as even remotely opposed to Erdogan.

I thought you of all the people can see through propaganda.

Let me give you a scenario: When Moi took over from Kenyatta and had to rescue the state from a tribe, how did that endear him to that tribe?

Edorgan is the first leader of Turkey that has come to power without the say so of the military. He set about dismantling their privileges and fiefdoms. Up to a point the propaganda seems to have managed to stop the clean up of the Army and the Judiciary. It is these two arms that staged the coup attempt.

I would take the rumors of a staged-managed coup seriously if it were not heavily backed by the senior officers earmarked for removal and retirement and supported by a Judiciary that openly supported the continuation of privilege. No country can claim to be a democracy when the military claims to the "The Guarantor" of "Secular" Democracy.

On the other hand if Edorgan did arrange this, then he will go down in history as a political wizard who found a way to remove the noose from the neck of Turkish Democracy by outsmarting the military and Judiciary.

Remember Morsi failed when he was unable to tame the military and the Judiciary.
The Turkish leader has become a dictator, who is more like Saddam. He is in the process of purging every govt institution of any moderate and bring in Islamists. Watch what will happen after this coup....
