on my first official "conference"
« on: June 26, 2015, 08:02:58 PM »
When I walked in the hall they looked at me like a piece of shat. I didn't exactly want to be there too. I was dressed casual in a tracksuit and wasn't expecting a hall full of suits and old men. Upon reading my name tag and company... different story. Old guys in suits from heavy duty industrial stalls smiling batshat crazy needed to show me the latest industrial switches and toys. I vaguely know dad did projects like oil rigs, factories, govt tenders, but obviously I had no idea what they were showing me. I pressed some buttons and they were pleased. I said I was hungry and left after 10mins.

Who are these people ?

I have to be in China to visit manufacturers and I've never been to China and have no clue what my company does. I don't even speak Chinese. What if they rip me off? I don't know what I'm doing.

Sanjay ? Why would that call me Sanjay ? I don't get it.

I do have one distinct advantage- family, from decades of pa yapping about stuff at the dinner table.

One old chap "national sales manager" for a brand i recognised went on about their LED made in America and American stuff was quality and lasted for long. I told him he got it all wrong. I was in America for the last 6 months and America was Fordian and way behind in LED. Their lights are ancient (pa had complained about that). The best makers of LED are from Korea who also happen to make American military stuff. He eyed me quietly. I also told him LED doesn't last like LED tvs and need to be replaced every so often and the product itself isn't quality. LED is for colourful energy saving efficiency and is tethered to fashion. Commercial shops change their lights every couple years to attract customers. LED makes a cheap alternative because it is a cheap alternative for the fashionable gimmicks they offer. Industries change their LED and lighting every so years for safety. No need to last. He nudged his business card in my hand.

I may not be trained in his stuff but boy oh me I had a dad obsessed with his work, and loved to glory on and on about lights, switches etc. etc. no amount of training can substitute for family.

I forgot about that. You have a memory like a hawk.

have you been training your brain with lumosity? i saw that ad today... it uses real neuroscience. personal trainer for your brain. it's really not the same as playing world of warcraft 24/7, or the sims or modern 6D trashy too social and graphical non-neuroscience games. lumosity borders on 90s or possibly 80s gaming retro interface like snakes and ladders, pacman, tetras and nintendo consoles consistent with its dorky founders.

are you a dork?

Help me understand this. I told them I needed to take a selfie of those buttons before heading to lunch.

speaking of factories.. i recall pa went to assess faulty electrical stuff at a factory, and he was shocked to find a giant warehouse cramped with workers. He went to the switchboard and cut the power supply and there was a loud cheer. The factory workers were patting each other because they didn't have to work. Pa took his time with his staff to "fix" the problem. Those workers got the day off. He was the most generous, kind gentleman. He'd surprise me with a chocolate bar every so often.
