GoK Bans Foreign Students in Mandera
« on: June 10, 2015, 02:56:12 PM »
How stupid can these people get? Hitler did not attack Switzerland like he did other "German" territories because he did not want to kill his bank manager! As long as Somalis have a stake in Kenya, they will not seek to destroy her. The Shifta menace ended when Somali elites found it best and in their interests to have a haven removed from their own cesspool. The corrupt could steal and relocate to Kenya. The coups in the country saw elites fleeing with their loot to Kenya only to be joined by those who kicked them out.

GoK should encourage - not discourage - Somali students from Somalia to attend schools not just in NEP but all over the country. Education is better than colonialism. It should the money its wasting on surveillance to sponsor more students, granting them scholarships and treating them with dignity. They will go back and be better than paid spies.

Indians were not targeted in this way. They allied themselves to whoever was in power and lobbied for extremely unfair advantages that granted them monopolies and created a super rich class.

Their reign came to a halting end when the IMF led liberalization saddled their businesses with one thing they never prepared for: Competition. Not from one organized huge conglomerate that they could squeeze and bend but from uncountable African businessmen.

Naturally many of them relocated to vestiges of monopoly in Africa starting with Tanzania (where they did not last long). The organized ones used their financial muscle to move up the food chain by dropping retail and wholesale business to concentrate on manufacturing. Others are still battling Africans in retail businesses with zero advantages.

But here we are talking about a major Kenyan ethnic group occupying a strategic area of the country. Somalis are a Kenyan tribe with equal rights.

I agree. But generally most kenyans regard somalis as ethnically distinct I guess with their Borana cousins. This probably due to their slightly different looks and their religion. So with or without Al shabaab they will be treated with suspicion...more as foreigners..with their country aptly named Somali.

Ironically Somalis have been in kenya for more than 3,000 yrs longer than any other tribe except for Khoisan like Okieks.

I pray for Somali to be fixed...this will ease all the tensions.

How about the so called Integration Commission initiate an ethnic exchange program where a number of members of one group can settled in a different county? Say your Bomet Area has no Bukusus although you have Luos and Kisiis. So you send like 46 Kipsigis to settle in each of the counties and you receive the same.

It sounds silly but I came to understand Somalis when I went to school with them, visited their homes and played with them as a kid.
These contacts help

They exhibit more ignorance than the Brits about the natives.  A Somali from Somalia is just like a Somali from Kenya.  They are antagonizing not just the Somalia Somalis, but the Kenyan ones as well.

So.   One strategy in the "war on terror" is to make sure that those who are most vulnerable to its lures stay ignorant, uneducated, and alienated from the rest of society.    Not exactly what one would describe as "brilliant", but there's GoK for you.
