Law enforcement is very lacking in Kenya. They only do it for a few days and then...... back to normal.
They need to be rewarded for crime prevention. That is th eonly way to reduce crime.

I once owned a matatu and this is what causes accidents.

1) The Kanju and police also own matatu and so they frustrate local matatu owners by fines of 2000 or 3000 maybe once or twice a week. That means that if you bought a matatu at 2MN through a 50% bank loan,That means you need between 40000-60000 a month to service the loan. That means if the police charge you with a fake traffic offence or impound your vehicle for several hours or even a day,It means you will not be able to make enough money to service that loan because you must make enough money between monday and friday which are busy days.

2) With the bullying of matatu owners by the police and regular bribes of 100/- in several road blocks in the morning, that means the matatu owner works for fuel, kamagera  and police bribes in the morning, After working for the bribes, the drivers and conductor have to work hard by lunch time inorder to have the salaries and money for food.So between 5Am-1PM you are basically servicing expenses. From 3 Pm rush hour, you have to look for the money for the car owner from 3000/- for the toyota hiace or the new nissan matatu.

3) The catch here is that,If the toyota hiace x japan has a engine know or gear faliure that needs from 100k overhaul or purchase,It means that you will not be able t service the loan or maintain the vehicle.

In light of the above, you have a matatu operator who is hunted by police and kanju,a vehicle which is not properly maintained due to high maintaince cost and a driver who has a lot of pressure from the owner to not just send the 3000 to the owner but also feed himself. This is what leads drivers and makanga to drinking beer early in the morning.

The worst part is that in light of the above situation, they are competing with matatu bough by MP MCA CECs Kanju Police which don't have loans or disturbance from police.SO they have to speed up in a hurry to make money....and then BOOOM YOU HAVE two  TURBO CHARGED matatus being driven by frustrated drunk drivers competing for customers.

The end result is DEATH AND MORE DEATHS.

That's the end result.Until Kenyans elect a president who isn't a thief an cracks down corruption from top down, such indirect consequences of corruption will continue.

That's how i sold my matatus.

NEVER AGAIN.
