342K motor bikes imported last year - time to make our own
« on: December 12, 2022, 11:28:42 AM »
Assuming each motorbike is a 1K dollars - this 350b dollar worth of imports - that we can easily manufacture.
And this can provide thousands of jobs.

Time to zero rated those assembled/manufactured locally - and put import duty on the rest.

There are a few bike manufacturers in Kenya. A good example is

https://ecobodaa.bike/

Drop import rates bike parts for assembling bikes and at the same time encourage local production for spare parts. With the number of bikes in Keya, spare parts local production of spare parts really worth it. Also electric bikes best way to go. Low maintanince and less parts needed for the bikes.

Yes it seem there is 10 percent duty for imported.
They wanted to add 10 percent excise duty but due to politics of this year they didnt.

I agree the focus should be electric bikes.
And also building bike parts.

Nobody want to talk about these boda boda because they are not fancy but they are real money spinners and world is moving there.

We are moving away from combustion to electric engine.

The trick here is to start an electric bike assembly company..partner with banks and insurance companies...sell the hype on media and get million of dollars from Europe or America.

Either Mzungu who can be trusted
or for Ruto gov to get interested - and transform Numerical Machine to produce spare parts for motor bike.
Moi had a great vision with Numerical Machines - but it now lying idle.
The problem as I see - kenya Juakali sector has not graduate from welding machines of 1990s to CNC machines.
In every local center - people are still buying welding machines, hammers and really basic tools - but you can get modern lathe, cnc and such that would easily produces lots of machining needs
People can easily manufacture bolts, nuts, sprockets, gears, etc - in their local centers.
In Nairobi this slowly changing - I see lots of cnc machines now - to produce patterns and such.
Next phase is to get them to produce more machine parts.

These bikes can easily be converted to elecric.
All we need is training people to do this and then te-export them to other coutntris.

With hasora fund becoming a reality juakali can have capital to buy into innovations. I wait to see how standardisation in affordable housing will push juakali.

Good effort for hasla to theme Jamhuri on technology though the overemphasis on IT misses the point that mwafrika transformation needs basic appropriate industrial technologies.
