Hawking will not be allowed on new Nairobi Expressway
« on: April 07, 2022, 03:50:20 PM »
To the disappointment of the coming Hustler Nation disciples, they will not be allowed to hawk on the expressway.

This is very insensitive of the Uhuru adminstration that only thinks about the children of the dynasties.

Even Kalejins and Maa folks will be let down as herding on the expressway is prohibited. :D :D :D

Stop the pettiness.
I dont see a problem - expressway - is by nature designed for speed vehicles.

Lol, I often feel am the real hustler in these parts. Ive had a forever beef with chasing hawkers in town, Ngara, and Eastleigh, like rats, with tear gas. I've always empathized with them because here they are, not trying to steal or rob but working hard, and the City Council police people show up with tear gas and rungus.

Now, before anyone comes to attack me here . . . I support hawerks being banned from the Express Way, which I believe bans even bodabodas. It's a road you have to pay for per use, anyway, with the advantage of faster speed/minimal congestion/direct routes etc.

I also am all for finding alternatives for hawkers. Not here saying there shouldn't be order. So tuliza boli  :D before coming here with unprovoked insults as has started to be too common in this here, Veri's board, which she formed to get away from such in the old nipate, from which we wisely decamped and followed (her) immediately.

Hawking should be allowed on certain streets on certain time.
I believe hawkers can self-regulate if they organized into groups with leaders.
The group punishment works better than chasing individual random hawkers.
I would allow street hawkers from saturday afternoon till monday.
Nairobi streets are empty - in sundays - they can become one big market for hawkers selling anything.
People can go there for cheap bargains.
On almost all streets allow hawking from 9pm - when all the shops have closed.
Disallow any hawking during the day when shops are open and there is huge human traffic.

Now you are on the right path. Hawking is not the issue. It just has to be done orderly for the benefit of the customers and the hawkers.

I remember some time back James Macharia the Transport CS (the most useless CS ever in that department) suggested something of that sort for the streets of Nairobi. As usual it was announced on short notice with no adequate planning and jus for the plans to be thrown out of the window same way they came. This can be done, but it needs good planning and discipline on the side of the hawkers.

divide nairobi into street saccos - each with uniforms and badges
