This article does a very good job of explaining why Abiy transaction\opportunistic type of leadership is what is ailing Ethiopia. A country like Ethiopia needs someone who is very smart. A visionary. The biggest problem right now is how to keep the country from Disintegrating into another Somali. The Oromos cannot be subjugated for ever. Tigrayans want to be left on their own corner of the world to self determine. Amhara ethno-nationalists centralized power so that they can use it lord of everyone else

Anyway this article does a better job of laying out the issues and problems and Abiy's role in them

The transactional politics practiced by Abiy and his backers is possible only with a solid macroeconomic foundation. The Ethiopian state is failing because that foundation is crumbling, and the help needed can only come from America, Europe, and the international financial institutions they still control. Washington has strong cards to play, if it wishes to play them.
