I doubt they have been at such variance like now..post kenyatta. Obviously Kenyatta was such a hero for kikuyus it was not possible to oppose him.
But the 90s-till now - 2013 - there has been robust debate.
Then Uhuru came and basically crushed any dissenting voice.
He was popular - reminded GEMA people of Jomo - and people thought he had their best interest.
Then BBI/Handshake/Ruto fallout - and the schism is now as wide as the great rift valley.
So wide - Uhuru was shown worst madharu I have seen on president...at least people come to look at the motorcade, outriders and all that.
But nyeri visit was pretty shocking - not even shop keepers bothered - not even the kids.
The president was left to address RECCE company
- you know a whole battalion accompany him.
Uhuru has to realize that he is becoming equal to Raila in the eyes of GEMA - an enemy.
And when you're an enemy - people look for the person you hate the most - and show him love - as way to get back at you.
It's like Kalenjin with Raila. Naturally they don't like Raila - but the more they thought about it - nothing would punish Kibaki more than Raila.
Otherwise Kalonzo was their guy - because Kalonzo had their demanour - cool, collected and calm - while Raila is reckless, loud and obxonoius - anthesis of what Kalenjin consider to be a real man.
Anyway Uhuru is very smart - he will drop Raila like hot coal. The people have spoken.
One thing with GEMA since time memorial, its not the leaders who give direction but the populance .
Remember Kuria Kanyigi back then in 97 when he shifted parties three times during his quest for Limuru seat , but his association with KANU /MOI during his defections lead to a defeat.
