I have always thought of "Jews" as an amorphous identity. Much like "Christians" or "Muslims". Anyone can claim to be a Jew without conferring onerous implications. It seems Martin Luther (of the protestant movement during the Roman empire) discerned the scam for its true nature... way back in 1543 AD!
