Nice incisive post this. Enjoyed reading that. You sound well grounded like the @enstein of old I used to debate when Nipate had a facility for awarding real "Reputation points". What is the _g for? Gravity?
Everybody knows that Moi was a terrible leader. We know that he and everyone around him stole like there's no tomorrow. We're just being objective and discussing his other facets. He was brutal to opposition, but who wouldn't be in those days, in Africa?

He, to the surprise of the people around him, repealed Section 2A of the constitution, giving rise to multipartyism. The opposition should blame themselves and not him, for not uniting and unseating him in 1992. He gave them the opportunity to do so.

He didn't hang on to the presidency like neighboring Ssebo and so many others, he exited bila drama in 2002. Kenyans stoned him and he asked for forgiveness. Kenya was still able to hold her own compared to other African countries, even with no natural resources -- no civil strife etc. I think the foresight behind his Peace, Love & Unity philosophy went over our heads though. I mean, it only took just one 5 year term without him at the helm for us to nearly tear this country down.

We like to imagine how the country would have been had Kibaki taken over in 1978. But there's a good chance that Kibaki and many like him would probably not have been able to navigate the political environment of the 80s, which potentially could have plunged the country into chaos.

To me, Moi is like that terrible father that we hated as children. But you grow up, and consider all the factors that he had to deal with, you don't excuse his badness, but you make an effort to understand it a little better.

Eish, thanks. Einstein is just a nickname that friends in a local uni gave me (for various reasons including the fact that I spoke some German), before I got a scholarship to go abroad after my first year. G is just one of my initials :)

Hitler had other facets too, go ahead and educate us about him. Kenyans are better served by demystifying the presidency, stop creating this cult like figures, leave that to uneducated maga and their God Trump. Democracy is better when the populace understands that these leaders are actually our employees and not vice versa. Moi had no redeeming qualities, if you think that he left without a fight, go tell that to people of Molo, ensupukia, saba saba victims and thousands that he detained and tortured without trial. As for the women, if he is your father, I am sad to inform you that you are a product of rape, dictators do not romance woman. Moi without presidency would have been just another ordinary Kale, nothing special to make women quiver. Kenya has survived and has been mostly peaceful not because of its leaders but Kenyans themselves. We have had Several provocations but Kenyans held back, killing of Tom Mboya, JM and other leaders, tribal clashes, stolen elections etc all these could have turned into mass casualty events but Kenyans held back. I personally will never buy into the mystic of this generally mediocre leaders, ati Kenyatta had lion eyes..lol.. these are stories told to peasants to keep them in check. To have assholes repeat this idiocy here in mind boggling.
