Pokots are 3rd most populous kalenjin; just after nandi; they make up to 15% of kalenjin (nandi are 20%) (about the same size if you factor pokots in uganda); 3 times more than tugen or keiyo or marakwet or sabaot....who make 5%. Kalenjin mainstream only need pokots when things are thick...otherwise for them pokot are aliens..
“With the situation in Nairobi still in a state of flux,” Morton writes, “Sumbeiywo had two options.
AUTOMATIC ARMS
The first was to drive to Eldoret and then fly Moi out of Kenya. Alternatively, they would head north-west and rally the Pokot, a fierce loyal warrior tribe that would have fought to the bitter end to protect their Kalenjin president.

I have always thought Pokot were a different group from the other Kalenjins. A bit like Marakwet but on steroids. At least that was the impression way back when I spent some decent time in the Rift Valley. Their incorporation to the mainstream Kalenjin seems like a relatively recent development.

Definitely kalenjin with heavy admixture of turkana..which is nothing unique given each kalenjin have heavy admixture of their neighbours..gusii,maasai and luhyas...pokots though do not care about that..attacking and raiding kalenjin just as well as their other neighbours.

I have always thought that the Kipsigis were the most populous Kalenjin community. So it is the Nandi?

Read again. Kipsigis are by far the most populous (about 40-45% of Kalenjin). They are more than twice the Nandis.Nandis are more about the size of Pokot (if you factor those in Uganda).

I have no doubt about their genetic kinship. They are Kalenjin. They just did not consider themselves as part of the larger group until fairly recently; post-colonial times. Their language differences probably delayed it further.
Ultimately it comes down to what they think of themselves. Marakwet for instance are Kalenjin because they have considered themselves as such for a long time. Even though their language is relatively different.
Africa has quite a few such cases. Igbo did not realize they were one tribe until bazungu told them. It took a bazungu to make them realize a kinship that would be immediately apparent to any outsider. The outsider usually has the advantage of a wider perspective.
The largest ethnic groups in Africa that did not have kingdoms are more or less the same.

RV PUndit, here is one of those times I miss your opinion:
How come these kales seem to disagree on the Pokot's plight?
Kongin,
You are barking up the wrong tree! I would advise you to spend that negative energy doing something productive for you and your family.
Anyway, I am in full support of disarming not only the Pokots but the entire warring factions in the North Rift who are clearly still living in stone age.
Joste! what does pokots have to do with Maswei..Ati wembe ni ule ule...iroito ngo asis...kiryooon...
kongin, what do you think is the way out of this mess?
Uhuru SHOULD stop the RAPE, DESTRUCTION of Property BEATING of youth in Baringo/Turkana

Searching and recovering illegal fire arms in Rift Valley is welcome but Uhuru Kenyatta and Julius Karangi’s 15,000 army
must STOP burning the houses, raping women and children and beating the youth to death in the name of recovering guns.
It’s a grave ABUSE OF HUMAN RIGHTS.

Was the attack on the APs deliberate to find reasons to descend on the people of Rift Valley?
What interests does the TNA government have in an area said to be of great natural resource potential?
Did the government deliberately refuse to act in time when a distress call came from this area on the fateful day of attack?
Why was there no back up sent even after Nairobi wad requested to do so. Why was there no action until until someone visited the area?
Why did someone in Statehouse not answer his phone call when the “bosses” in Nairobi were trying to contact him for direction?
And you bet after this operation, no one will tell you how many guns have been recovered.
ONLY BODIES OF DEAD PEOPLE AND CHILDREN INFECTED BY AIDS!

These people should definitely sue the govt for this atrocities. Govt should protect not destroy. Colletive purnishment is immoral. Kenyatta needs to take responsibility in this.
