More like 80% of the population.

It begs the question why the most developed countries in the world(minus North America and Australia) are choke-full of people.  I think 5 million, 1 million or whatever number and producing nothing that anybody(including themselves) wants results in the same situation.
I remember reading this article by some Kyuk academic that made me doubt the over-population thing, particularly as directed towards Africa. Dude cited stats that made me think if its a prob, then it's a developed-world problem, not an African problem. Not only are they densely populated, as you state, waaaaay more than us, they also use up resources to a crazy tune: something like, one American uses up 35 times the amount of resources as one Indian and 53 times as much as a Chinese or something like that: Now imagine the comparison to Africa? Would not surprise me if one Amrican uses as much as 100 of us, I swear.

Also, the UN's food body, FAO, calculates that we already produce food sufficient for 12 billion healthy people today! Yet world population estimates for the turn of the century, year 2100, is 10 billion only. So, we literally are producing more than we need: We just don't distribute it to everyone who needs it. So about 2 billion people are too poor to buy it, but it's available. In terms of the other resources, the problem is squarely in the West! They need to reduce their population to like 20% before their "concerns" about our overpopulation can begin to sound like something other than blatant racism to me.

This type of idignity of Kenyans seeking handouts on simple things need to end. Yaani NGOs go to Wazungu to beg for Sanitary pads. That is lowering our dignity. Take a cloth and deal with the problem or get a towel. Jaimacan slaves did not have toilet tissue so they would hang a piece of cloth in the toilet to wipe their bums. The same rug was used by women during menses. That where the insult BLOODYCLOT BOOMCLAT came from

It's not just Kenya though.  I know a Ghanaian lady who runs an NGO for this same exact stuff.  They raise money and send sanitary pads to girls in Ghana.

That is so crazy. Africans beg from condoms to sanitary pads. We have no shame

We have people in Kenya who have so much but wont give anything to any poor orphans. Yet they spend big in Europe while others in Kenya lack basics.
Distribution of resources has never been addressed since independence.
Samething has been happening in USA for the last 30yrs.
The super-class are extremely wealthy, yet they keep getting tax breaks.

The problem of population is not the total population. At least not yet.
It is the structure of population.
You can have 1.5B people like India and China..but if every family has 1-2 kids then you'll be fine.
For really economy start at family level.
I don't think it's a big deal for many to raise 1 or 2 kids - however poor they are - especially if they are 2 parents or like China 4 parents if you include the grand parents. 2 or 4 adults can easily feed/educate 2 kids. Just like not big deal for adult to feed themselves if they are single.
The problem in Africa is having too many children per person.
Africa is not populated.
The world is not populated.
Cities can carry incredible amount of people thanks to building technologies.
New York has 10m people living in the area the size of Nairobi City.
So the world carrying capacity is huge.
We can squeeze 50M Kenyans in 3 mega cities of 15m each.

Africa just need to reduce the number of kids per family or woman.
And poverty will become history.

Third world countries and their problems...it all comes down to corruption, stop stealing, stop politics of power and concentrate on production and productivity and please stop embarrassing yourself. If I was a leader of a county receiving billions but women have to beg foreigners for sanitary pads, I would quit the same day. If you work on creating employment, jobs that pay a livable wage, you will never see or hear this kind of nonsense again. When I came to the USA( thank God for getting me out of that shithole) I went to a bar with my buddy and ordered that huge flask of beer that student on a budget usually order, the bartender gave us the wrong draw, when we told him that it was the wrong beer, he poured it down the drain and gave us the right beer, you realize there and then that you are in the land of plenty. In a week, an American probably throws away enough food to feed a Kenyan village. Turkana and most of north eastern is suffering from major water shortage. I saw the other day people lined up with jerrycans for miles for this one tap of water. These counties have received billions of shillings since devolution, it’s nauseating.

F& B I saw numbers like $ 2 billion a week or so of food wasted or thrown away by Americans in a week or so. Interesting how we had the same experience coming to this country.  I remember going to a drive through with this African American guy during lunch break and when we received our drinks waiting for the food he gulped his drink and asked for a refill.  To my surprise they  refilled it with no extra charge.  We in Africa have a long way to go for sure.

Most developed countries are not densely populated if you don't count recent immigration, their fertility levels have been below replacement for sometime now. Every year thousands of hectares revert back to wilderness from farmland in Europe. Subsistence farmers had it easier back before the population boom in Africa. They don't need to produce nothing, they just did fine without modern industry and trade.

I have to correct you. You have that typical Kenyan attitude of attributing all ills on malfeasance and corruption.  It is not just a matter of money, but one of technical capacity, and natural limitations. You can have trillions if you live in a desert, water will always be scarce. It would be wiser for those counties to spend more money on population control, which will yield a greater bang for their bucks.

It's a good theory, and intuitive, but decades of data and research show that people stop producing more children as they develop. If the West was truly worried about "overpopulation" in the third world, they'd be investing in its development, not locking it out of fair trade and bogging it down with horrendous loans and restructuring. Bottom line, the whole overpopulation wolf cry is simply a way for the west to mask their depletion of resources. It's not about food and other basic necessities (we have more than we need).

Africans need tough love like China one-child policy. You can't zip it you pay through the nose. Prayer and hope will not work soon.

That policy was successful because it was coupled with China's entry into WTO. Without the trade of the last 30 years, China would still be a poor country.

This reproduction thing/trend seems to be biological. Poor people reproduce more than secure people, possibly because instinctually, they are not sure their offspring will survive while secure people feel less instinctual pressure to have more than two, well-cared-for offspring. The data over decades all over the globe shows that reproduction automatically goes down with development. You can see the same trend even in our Kwinya. Very rare to see a young family of more than two/three kids in the urban areas. Most of them are in shags.

Who suggested prayer and hope, btw?

There you are totally wrong. Most developed countries especially Europe are densely populated. Look at Japan and also S. Korea. Very small countries with huge population.
Africa has a lot of space, but our population explosion is too high. We cannot cope with the rate of increase.

The Chinese didn't wait to be developed to control their birthrate. That is a very narrow path. What's with the s/he? Robina is a woman - you recently told us you Kadudu are a man and it does not bother us.

It is even linked to health as iron deficiency/anemia due to the blood loss. Further complicated as it gets to affect kids borne by such mothers.

There is need for investing in family based health Cuban style. Sensitization and maybe jailing of politicians telling poor folks to give birth like rats. Should be part of hate speech nonsense maybe.

I have no problem with that plan, if Africans want to do that to help ourselves. My beef is with western arguments about overpopulation couched as concerns over climate change and environmental concerns and somehow ending up as a third world problem with particular focus on Africa. Because I know it's baloney what they're trying to imply: We have a minuscule negative impact on the earth, unlike developed countries so it really irks me. Africans themselves choosing to control our birth rates to manage our own development is not a problem for me.

Yes of course but it takes time; you gotta push it; through family planning, birth controls, providing abortion clinics, contraceptives.

Yeah the politicians - democracy - compounds the problem. Child bearing is still treated like a big achievement in most of Africa yet noone but NGOs will call it out. Saying people are poor because they have too many children but they will stop over-reproducing when their socioeconomics improve is a vicious cycle. Conventional family planning is chicken & egg strategy. One-child and such policy is a leapfrog. Changing the population structure is transformational because it automatically increases productivity. Although it causes other problems down the line.

I know. Africa's contribution to climate change is directly tied to the 2-3% economic output. Doesn't even feature in the stats.

Africans are hopeless. We lack the ability to plan and execute. Most africans react to life instead of planning for it. Look at 35% of africans that drink, they are still behaving like frat boys. Look at most kenyans in the west, they cannot cover a $30k emergency without harambee.

That is a lot of money. Worked all my life and only once did I have such cash in my account. Was not even my money. :D :D :D
