One of the unfortunate things for the Republicans is that the media have been left to succeed in making some Republican leaders to fight against their own party leader like in Jubilee. Did Democrats support slavery or not? What caused the civil war? Going by their tantrums about statues of slave owners I get confused how these guys reason. The slavery-loving Deep South was run by the Democrats. 99% of the negro lynchings were in the Democratic states of Oklahoma, New Orleans, etc.

Yep.  When the GOP was actually the party of Northern liberals and the Democrats the party of Southern conservatives.  At a minimum they are no longer the same parties they were.  Today's GOP is barely recognizable as the same GOP 20 years ago, let alone over a century ago.

If you don't account for the fact that the parties changed, it can be confusing.  The strong attachment Republicans have for these Confederate monuments would also cause confusion under such circumstances.
