How later Kibaki closed the 1M gap  & "beat" Raila by 200K votes could only be described as brazen rigging!
After the country erupted in unprecedented rage and fury - Raila would later destroy that leverage and settled for NARA alone - against the advice of his chief negotitators!
That NARA had no role for his real General William Ruto...leave alone the comical General Miguna Miguna..who deserve our pity for being mentally unstable.
If Raila had gotten something for Gen Ruto...he would have been able to pacify Ruto and win 2013 & 2017.
And Ruto would still be on course for 2022!

Suffice to say Uhuru Kenyatta was the principal beneficiary of the 2007 debacle - while Raila Odinga was the victim.

Exactly. And yet in 2007 - Uhuru was basically down and out. He had buried KANU and left for Gideon Moi. He had no party.

Yes, Kibaki rigged the elections which RAO had won hands down (I was a firm supporter of RAO at the time).

But (there's always a but), I recall reading an article in Sept. 2007 whereby Kibaki was forced by the MKM to run for re-election (I'll try looking for the said article). That's why PNU was cobbled up last minute and Kibaki started started campaigning late.

The reason?

The stupid madoadoa talk from RAO and Ruto.

No Kibaki lost it the day he discarded the MOU he had agreed with LDP. If he had been a gentleman and kept his side of the bargain with LDP crew - it would not have degenerated so fast - KANU got back to power so soon and now has a choke-hold of the state.UhuRuto have shown us how to play politics.

Kibaki basically screwed up big time.

The reason?

The stupid madoadoa talk from RAO and Ruto.

I agree with the first part of your analysis however the 2nd part I disagree. Ouruto are not long term thinkers.  Dividing the country and stealing elections has divided this country, entrenched tribalism and corruption.  It is falling apart and will not even take us to 2022. What we need is an inclusive, democratic system that will last us years. The Ouruto system is not sustainable and it is proving to be worse than Kibaki's.  At Least NARA redeemed Kibaki a little bit. You are certainly simply NOT privy to the hatred against Uhuruto in the NASA zones.  You cannot spin your way out of this one.

On this I agree with Pundit, Kibaki committed the worst sin against this country when he betrayed his partners long before 2007 or even 2005 referendum. Why? We had literally burried tribalism. It was gone.Kwisha. Kibaki made sure the still-fresh graves of those social vices broke open and released their resurrected occupants. He killed a dream and a vision of a united Kenya. Whatever Moi's mistakes were, I will always consider Kibaki worse than him.
