Now -The port handled 15 million tonnes of cargo between January and June compared with 13.4 million in the same period last year.

Transit transport accounts for a significant portion of the total traffic handled at the Port, increasing rapidly over the past five years from 1.31 million tones in 1999 to 2.21 million tones in 2002. Trans-shipment traffic has also trippled over the same period: from 143,000 tonnes in 1999 to 340,000 tonnes in 2002.

Conclusion we need more SGRs.more ports (mombasa,kilifi,lamu)- this current one was projected to handle I think 22M of tonnes.

In 10-20 years from now....we are talking more than 100-300m metric tonnes?

Precisely.  Also note neighboring countries that used to buy products from Kenya have figured out they can also buy directly at cheaper price from china.

It's one direction; 90% seem to be imports; 10% exports; hopefully we can turn this around if we get say minning off ground? And eventually exporting finished products?
