Please tell me this is a joke, Uhuru is outsourcing rural electrification to a musician only heavens know what
will come out of this but it has doom written over it.....Akon Naija manager must be laughing all the way to the bank

Senegalese singer, Akon has committed to light up Kibera slums as part of a major government led transformation of the slum to a modern neighbourhood.

Akon made the promise during a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Nairobi on Thursday. Akon trip to Kenya is a follow up of another meeting in Washington DC during the US-Africa Summit in August.

Akon met with Energy CS Davis Chirchir, Kenya Power MD Ben Chumo, President's Private Secretary Jomo Gecaga and Rural Electrification CEO and agreed on specifics for implementation that with be carried by Akon Light Africa Project.

Akon will also participate in the rural electrification process and will hold another meeting with Rural Electrification Authority to finalize on specifics.

Other initiatives to transform Kibera include one led by Devolution CS Anne Waiguru through the NYS and another to reconstruct all Roads in Kibera spearheaded by Roads CS Michael Kamau.

Lands and Housing CS Charity Ngilu will also start the Modern housing programme for Kibera.

Biggest ripoff of our time. If you read the book confession of the economic hit man, one of the major item that these guys would pimp to presidents
is electrification and how this would transform an area or country. In this one i see uhuru hands and some shadow company set up to rip off kenyan taxpayer. That's NOT rapper proceeds. A "charity" can't cover a project of that scale. That's a cover for something else. It needs to be investigated.

To end a "slum" is simple. Let me over-simplify:

1. Construct a modern sewage and drainage system covering every inch of the slum;
2. Allow people to connect to it for free;
3. Construct a modern road network;
4. Network stepped down electricity in the entire area
5. Whatever you do, start with a water system. It is best if the water is "free" and reliable

The slum then dies slowly of "natural causes". Houses are renewed and others demolished and modern ones put up by the owners.

Catch: If you fail to extend cleansing, (people centred) security, and maintenance services, all the above will go to waste. I would recommend buying street cleaning machines which would keep the roads open.

All the other things are just meant to MAINTAIN the slum.

Are you sure you are not buying in to Jubilee and KI propaganda? How many choos are in the housing scheme Raila started?

Won't work. Nobody will invest money without the security of a title deed.That to me is the bottomline. You can sink millions to build a flat but gov can demolish it or gangs can take over it.

The way forward is to allocate sectional titles to Kibera residents....so one plot can have 100 families...in shares..they can then flip those shares or jointly build.

RVP/Omollo: Both your points are valid to some extent. changing these ghettos will require collaborative effort between government and private initiative. Places like Kibera and other slums located on very prime real estate can be candidates to mega urban renewal projects.

Kibera has water, electricity and somewhat good roads given there is barely space to walk with legs. What is needed and which won't cost gov a dime...is to issue title deed to all slum resident owning structures...they will probably kill each other in allotment...but it has to be done.

2. The mistake made is to imagine one can put up high quality houses in a slum and they would be any different. If you look at the architectural history of Kibera, it has been "improving" with time without ever ceasing to be a slum. Form grass thatched houses to mabati and now bricks and blocks. Yet it remains a slum.
