Lodging

Sarova Stanley Hotel has been a Nairobi classic for over a hundred years. It is centrally located with those unforgettable ceiling fans. Double rooms from $225.

The Fairview is near the center of town, offering spacious gardens. From $205.

And of one of the "nicer" parts of Nairobi, this just in: http://www.nation.co.ke/news/Langatas-dead-rest-in-pieces-and-raw-sewage/1056-3487710-6b1kmyz/index.html

I'm sure there are all sorts enjoying the places.    I was more interested in the average Kenyan---whose income per year is?---and how much he/she gets to enjoy our great country in the manner suggested by the NYT.

Hotels in Kenya especially Nairobi are over priced. Visit Ghana to appreciate. There you find high quality hotels charging no more than USD 50 or less (for extended stay). A similar hotel i Kenya would charge three times that.

If you get a cheap room in Nairobi say to yourself "there is a rat hidden somewhere". And sure as hell you will find rats and a lot more.

Average Kenyan will never see fruits of independence. However if one is a cop or the right govt job you can steal to riches n afford a 40k lunch,

Of course this is not to dispute that the average Kenyan can barely afford to visit his/her own country but Airbnb has really picked up in Kenya, with extremely sensational prices.
