6 lane highway alongside SGR
« on: September 22, 2016, 02:45:09 PM »
The Government has announced plans to partner with the private sector to build a six-lane highway from Mombasa to Nairobi are at an advanced stage.
Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the project is bankable and that private sector players will be invited to express interest in the mega project.
Speaking at a Nairobi hotel during the Nairobi Business Stakeholders luncheon hosted by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), the CS said the six-lane road and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) will link Nairobi with the Port of Mombasa, and ease traffic flow besides shortening the time taken for cargo to reach Nairobi and the region.

I feel that some "people" will create infrastructure bond, rally mwananchi to buy the bonds....and build the "bankable" highway. Profit will be made by well connected.

But it might be cheaper for passengers to use the highway if the sgr passenget trains are not subsidised by GOK.

The CS should stop building castles in the sky.
The road should only be 4 lane highway but reserve space for future expansion.

Nobody does highways like the Chinese.    Thankfully so:

Puts into perspective the use of "superhighway" to describe that road to Thika  :D

Mombas-Nairobi should only be six lane till Salama. Then 2 lane till Mtito Andei. After that it is wilderness and Tsavo. The make it six lane from Mariakani to Mombsa. Nairobi to Nakuru should be four lane (from Limuru to Nairobi -six or eight lanes).

They should build it progressively. One doesnt need 6 lanes in a jungle!!

Okoth is onto something. I hope he succeeds in getting logistic companies to buy their own wagon.

Look like US's EXIM and Betchel are committed to do this...although I don't see the viability. Nakuru-Nairobi would make more sense. Also building Lapset from LAMU to Thika would make more sense. It shorter than Thika-Mombasa.

There's a obsession with connecting the coast with upcountry instead of spending more money interconnecting all the counties. The Lamu thika passing through Nanyuki would open up another region to development especially Tana River and parts of samburu.
