I ran into their stand at my local mall today. Looks like they're seeping into Australia.

I'm not so sure about that. The stand was completely empty. That day I just got a new phone with HTC, although it was broken so I'm getting it replaced with a Microsoft phone. As a consumer when I think of a Chinese brand it doesn't sit well with me, even though other brands are made in China as well. I think it comes down to user functionality. Recognized brands know the user like HTC, Nokia etc. I don't even think iPhone, or event Microsoft know a phone user. I have an iphone and it's just awful.

Best phones are starting to emerge from china. Talk of xiaomi et al.. I believe they will eclipse iPhone, samsung in a few years.

I think they are already the biggest having overtaken Ericsson.  Which is impressive given that they are virtually non-existent in the US.

Hard to find Huawei.

If one considers just mobile phones, then there's a list like this:

And Xiaomi is only 5 years old, so there's no telling where it will go.

I think they are the largest specifically in telecom equipment.  Or one of the largest. 

To be fair, in recent times, it's hard to say where exactly to place some of these companies.  A lot of overlapping and merging of things that were once considered distinct.  There was a time it was easy to distinguish between information tech and communications companies.  It's a bit tougher these days to say what kind of animal Apple or Google is for instance.  These guys are in the middle of trying to become everything.  From smart home appliances, futuristic cars to space-faring technology.

Though, you are right, if you combine what can generally pass for tech today, then Huawei is not quite there.  Still I think in some aspect, like physical communication equipment, Huawei(maybe Cisco or Ericsson) might be there.  Huawei I suspect mostly by virtue of dominating the huge Chinese market.

Huawei will be big, but quality will be a mirage for some time to come. Their phones don't last a year.
