Mauritian firms are reputed to produce cheap sugar helped by modern equipment and factory efficiency.

Uhuru's a liar. Uhuru purposefully killed the sugar industry. Such a cheap shot by Uhuru to kill off the sugar industry just because it's Raila's enterprise and has the potential to be used as biofuels in place of oil.

I hope the new owners will do a better job. The current Indians owners are swindling people of their hard earned cash through various schemes. In fact a lot of people, including my family members, are threatening to uproot the cane if things remain the same. Sugarcane farming for the most part to me brings more poverty for small scale farmers than the wealth it promises.

I think studies have shown if you have less tha 4 acres to dedicate to sugar cane farming..you should never attempt it. Sugarcane farming is more like renting out your land. What small scale farmers need are ventures that are really labour intensive..like dairy farming, tea farming, anything that keep them occupied and paid through out the year. One sugar can is planted and weeded maybe twice...you sit idle for 2yrs waiting for the harvests. And then like it really deplete nutrients from soils....so pretty much that land become useles.
