I'm a firm believer that behind every disease, genocide, massacre and destruction there is a demonic entity. It's a matter of finding and battling that before healing can take place. I think when there is a potent mix of hate- destruction and death spiral. We are a victim of our own venom and end up sacrificing to the gods for penance and cleansing. Maybe that's just the natural order of the cosmos.
