I think it's about the scale and the impact of such donation. If America were really doing something big on something; say health and nutrition; we would see that impact; it would manifest in near world class health and nutrition. We see what China does in Africa..bringing world class infrastructure here.

So America has two problems..impact (doubtful) and scale (doubtful)...their model simply doesn't work or they are just helping with so little.

China are doing things on grand scale in Africa.

The American contributes more than nothing to the Kenyan.  Mostly to do with health and well being.  These are things whose importance is only apparent when one loses them.

I am sure MOON Ki would ask what the Kenyan or Naija has contributed decades after earning his freedom.  A more valid question.

If the Thika Road were built with Western money, the western media would pile it on the head of the government that "wasted tax payer money" while they used theirs on corruption.

Precisely. They've lost the plot and their help is now more cynical.The Japanase and Chinese have been doing visible projects that really impact folks.The America with their 700M dollars a year just seem to divide the money into thousand little projects with doubtful impact and visibility.

Naive Africa is rich in natural resources and she is placed to keep China's booming, oil hungry economy on the road.

In almost every corner of Africa there is something that interests China. There is copper, iron ore to extract and oil to refine in Africa. Chinese companies are spying trading and checking out investment opportunities.

Chinese are not stupid and will offer a "no-strings" aid to an 'NAIVE AFRICAN', a marked contrast to United States who impose conditions on aid and tie trade goodies to human rights issues.

I had this discussion with a colleague. It turns out even the handing over of Panama Canal aroused so much wivu that Carter lost the elections.

But the most heart rendering story that would make Hubris smile is the way the US trashed Iraq's billions rather than see them money used to rebuild the country. Billions of hard Iraq cash were illegally dumped in Iraq. I hope one day some responsible government would demand that cash.

The last major British project was the Mumias - Kakamega road. It is high quality, I must agree. I have no idea what the Germans ever built in Kenya. I know the Israeli's have a few roads to their name - even though most are now depleted.

Kenyans do not understand that most of the roads in Kenya are put up by their own government with their own taxes.

He used school funds to build staff houses, classrooms etc. In no time, the rumour went that it was Mzungu money building those structures. It didn't help when a public meeting was called "to remove" the Principal and the wazungus countered those lies. The narrative just changed: He blackmailed the wazungu to lie for him.

That is mostly why colonialism ended. Europe politicians couldn't justify money spent to build say Kenya-Uganda railway.

Talking of Germany, I also know very little they've done here. The French have been big in kenya...from Turkwell to Ndakaini dam to many other projects..the Japs too have done a lot...Sondu Miiru, Olkaria, several roads and name it...China are on a different level now.

The Brits, Americans and Germans...outside their AID or multilateral institutions such as WB/IMF/EU...they have not lend a hand in any project I can point my figure on.

And the reason is what you reveal to us...any such projects would make any administration unpopular..their media will splash images all over. Imagine Thika superhighway financed by the British. The gov in charge will lose power instantly.
