More goods new..15k to connect to power
« on: May 27, 2015, 04:14:40 PM »
Jubilee target 70% power supply to every household. Kibaki started from 10% and moved it to 30%. So far we are at 40%.

http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/Kenya-Power-connections-lowered-to-Sh15-000/-/539546/2731146/-/mheevy/-/index.html

Quote
And according to Dennis Itumbi
Last Mile

1. All households and businesses near a transformer to be connected

2. Only one customer near a transformer needs to apply, the rest will be automatically connected

3. Customers will no longer queue for service, Kenya Power will just connect them.

4. Those who cannot afford to pay for wiring will get a ready box with a switch.

5. Connection Cost has come down from Shs.35,000 to 15,000

6. You can pay by instalments ranging from 2 months to 5 years.

7. The instalments will e charged on your monthly electricity bill.

8. Connections will increase from 35% to 75% in two years.

9. 20,590 Primary School are now connected to power, the remaining 1,630 will be switched on by August 2015.

10. Primary school connection means all households and businesses near public primary schools will be connected to power.

?#?LastMile? has begun applying...
There is a new power connection Cost

I watched Itumbi on #JKL and much as I know he earns his pay by spinning BS, he had some remarkable stuff to say about Jubirlee.

-said the retirement bill was not targeting to deny Rayirla his pension but just needed harmonization bla de bla.
- said Jubirlee was doing 10/20K tarmacking all over Kenia in 5yrs.

Point is Jubirlee may be delivering in some sections and this should not be overlooked as we focus on its epic fails

My broda, surely is that all you took from it?
He made some verifiable claims. Look them up, roads, hospitals....

Right except for insecurity and corruption; I think the dynamic duo have really tried new common sense ideas; I like their get it done attitude;

Power sector; Generation by 2017 will be 5,000MW..which would be 3 times what they inherited. The number of those connected will grow to 70% from 30% they inherited. SGR will be in Nairobi and transport cost will reduce by nearly 1/3 and so will travel time. Then 10,000kms new roads (very ambitious) will mean doubling the tarmac we have in 5yrs. LAMU project. Possibly Galana irrigation.

If they deliver these stuff; they would have really worked their butt off.

That projected 70%.  Is that for Nairobi or the whole country?

That is whole country. The figure now is anywhere btw 35-40%. With electricity you're talking about households. Not individuals [like say mobile penetration]. They are about 45M (projected) kenyas with an average household size of 4 or 5 or 6 (??). That brings us to 10M households. KPLC right now have I think 3.something m household connected. They need to connect 3.something million by 2017 to achieve Jubilee ambition of 70% (7M) KPLC customers. That is nearly 1m every yr...from the current nearly 400K connections per yr.  For the last few yrs..i think since 2011/2012...connection fee has hampered new connections...it stagnated at 320-350K per yr...but if they eliminate the need to pay 15K upfront...then I see them do 1M or more.

There is a lot of pent up demand for electricity. Of course there is an issue of making rural connection profitable...considering rural folks turn on power for 2hrs daily at around the same time..and then shut it up for next 22hrs...so you have peak demand that fries transformer..or you need expensive disel generators stepping up for 2hrs (btw 7-9pm) everyday..and after 9pm news..everyone is dead asleep..no refrigerator..maybe a phone getting charged.

In short this is not an end to itself....kenyans have to become more prosperous to afford chinese trinkets that consume more electricity going forward.

That projected 70%.  Is that for Nairobi or the whole country?

the cost of connection has been inflated by suppliers .... Why should a wooden pole cost 12,000... don't the suppliers buy from farmers at less than 5,000.... most of the items listed are just inflated by tenderpreneurs making power connection damn unaccessible to many

to address the low demand in ruaral areas  I think they are using the Single Wire Earthing Return (SWER) system design ...they should also consider underground cabling as rural areas roads and access have few excavations going on ....... the number of customers connected to one transformer should also be more ...looking at the connections in the slums shows it can be done .... and if guys are affording airtime and paying for boda bodas daily they can afford 200 per month

Kenya Power is more intent on making a killing connecting people than selling its product .....

Don't be too quick to say inflated. You have to consider the cost of transporting the poll from the farm to the factory where it will be put in vacuum treatment plant and then transported again to the site. All that add costs. And of course profit.

SWER design will use lighter poles..so cost come down...But I agree there is pent up demand for electricity...

With about 35,000 transformers out there...there are very few people who don't live 600 meters from a transformer..and as KP connect those near the transformer...CDF and County Gov plus REA should work to spread transformers to those who don't yet have them.
