The facilities, spread across counties including Nairobi, Kisumu, Busia, Bungoma, Kajiado, Kilifi, Mandera, and Wajir, are accused of manipulating patient records and admissions to fraudulently draw funds from the newly rolled-out SHA system.
Some of the hospitals are alleged to have registered hundreds of fake inpatient beds despite being small clinics, while others admitted ghost patients, filed exaggerated claims, or billed both SHA and patients for the same services.
Investigations revealed coordinated misuse of SHA pre-authorization codes and systematic double-charging in both outpatient and surgical procedures.
Among the hospitals on the spot are Jekim Hospital Meru, Jekim Medical Centre, Joy Nursing & Maternity (Eastleigh), Amal Hospital Ltd, Beirut Pharmacy and Medical Centre, Afya Bora Hospital Annex Ltd (Mwea), Charity Medical Centre, Queens and Kings Hospital, Chest & Skin Clinic, Kiritiri Medical Healthcare, Meswo (Tunza) Medical Services, Familia Bora Medical, and Naivasha Quality Healthcare.
Others include Bingwa Family Clinic, Elburgon Nursing Home, Nyamira Jamii Medical, St. Joseph Shelter of Hope, Lenmek Hospital, Equity Afia Buruburu, Muranga High School Dispensary, Mathingira Medical Centre, Ruai Medical Centre, and Thuti Medical Clinic. The Ministry of Health has begun referring files to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for criminal proceedings.
