Labour cost in kenya is ridiculously high to attract meaningful textile industry to compete with other sweatshops in bangladesh, india, vietman etc. Cost of production has to be addressed. Kenya is caught in a no mans land, it has hign labour cost for unskilled labour and not enough skilled labour to attract specialized jobs at reasonable labour cost.
At current exchange rate of shilling to the dollar, workers including white collar jobs are paid $100 dollars a month so which high labour jobs are you talking about? Ama ni kuropoka tu? Western countries take manufacturing of known brands to China and Taiwan. Those leaving China are headed to lower cost countries that you mentioned, India, Mexico, and Vietnam. Our labour costs with those countries are equivalent to these countries. Our undoing is corruption and tax policy that make easy of doing business unfavorable.
Kenya has high labour cost especially in textile sector compared to the likes of banglandesh
