I love Kalenjin culture, politics, arguments, and order of things. I remember back in the 90s when pombe mtaani started wrecking families and young men in my village. Kokwet (neighborhood) met and deliberated on the way forward for days. The decision was reached by the majority on how to curb the menace. The decision was reached that every Saturday around 3-6 pm, at Kokwet under a big mogoywet tree, the offenders would be disciplined by two 7 foot military officers (Abraham Kitur and Nicholas Cheruiyot). Both used to train army recruits at Moi Barracks, so they were highly revered. Men and women alike were caned in front of the public every Saturday for almost a decade. By year one, Pombe, hopelessness, and drugs were vanquished entirely in the 4 surrounding villages. Grades in school went up, marriages became stable, and everything changed completely. If you misbehaved as a young man back then Cheruiyot name when thrown around you will change you act very quick or you will shit on your pants every Saturday if your name is forwarded by kokwet.
