Another of my old favourites ..... Hugh Masekela used to tell this story about his arrival in America. The wazungu were astonished that (a) he could speak, and (b) he could do it in English! They attributed all this to his rapid "Americanization" and swore that it had made a lasting impression. Apparently they thought that his pre-arrival linguistic skills were limited to saying "ooga booga!".
