Left hand drive vehicles now to be allowed in Kenya?

KRA and KEBS had banned the importation of Left Hand Vehicles.  So, with Uhunye's decree about diasporans now to be allowed to return home with their vehicles when he was in the US in August, is KRA and KEBS lifting the ban on the importation of LHD vehicles?

Uhunye is left handed too. May be it is time to think about people who use the left hand as well. It is called being mindful of others.

Is it for returness only. I thought they later said you could import an equivalent  RHD vehicle duty free.

Reading that thing..they are NOT ALLOWED. What is allowed is if you owned BMW in US 1yr before returning..you can sell your LHD BMW..import a similar RHD from say Japan or Germany....duty free.

then it is complicated. in a nut shell they are saying they still won't allow you to bring your LHD car

There is no basis for this ban (on LHD) and certainly not on the 8 year rule. These rules should be challenged in court.

Why ban Kenyans from driving LHD but allow Rwanda, Burundi and DRC vehicles to drive on the same roads. If it is a question of safety, then prove to me that Kenyans as a genetic group are predisposed to cause serious accidents when driving LHDs than RHDs? Its all hogwash. The two rules have the same reasoning behind it.

1. The new car market is now at home with competition arising from Japanese and UK used cars. Cars that are under 8 years old are almost as expensive as the poor quality contraptions they peddle in Kenya. Remove the 8 year rule and you end up with used cars of high quality that are sinfully cheap. It would put them out of business

2. The has been a drop in prices of used European cars over the years. You can buy a mercedes for under USD 1000 in Europe.   That would spell disaster to the local dealers of poor quality contraband. In between fleecing the government, they need an occasional bank financed local buyer. They have no chance if this person can get a cheap Germany Merc LHD. 

3. Insistence on documentation is to deter importers from changing LHD to RHD before export. Such a move would most likely not be approved in the country of origin and there would consequently be no certificate of roadworthiness.

These are just tricks which as I said elsewhere need to be checked by whoever is in charge of checking monopolies and unfair trade between businesses.

PUBLIC NOTICE CONVERSION OF MOTOR VEHICLES FROM LEFT HAND DRIVE TO RIGHT HAND DRIVE

KEBS has received enquiries on whether motor vehicles originally designed as left Hand Drive could be converted to Right Hand Drive without compromising any safety requirements. After consultations with other Government Departments, the official position is that:
(a) Imported motor vehicles are subject to compliance with the requirements of Kenya Standard KS 1515:2000 which amongst other requirements specifies that imported motor vehicles should be less than 8 years old and Right Hand Drive.
(b) The conversion of the Drives from Left Hand to Right Hand naturally interferes with amongst other requirements, the symmetry of the vehicles and by extension their safety.

Consequently, conversion of the Drives in motor vehicles from Left Hand to Right Hand is not acceptable and such vehicles shall NOT BE ALLOWED into the country. Importers of motor vehicles are informed to ensure they liaise with suppliers and the local franchise of the particular dealers of the brands they intend to import to confirm they were originally Right Hand Drive right from the manufacturing date.

KEBS Inspection Agencies for Motor Vehicles have been instructed not to inspect any Motor Vehicles that have undergone conversion from Left Hand Drive to Right Hand Drive.
