Dude excitedly posted a piece dissing organic agriculture thinking he got us :D

A few definitions first, there are three types of agriculture:

1. Conventional agriculture - uses chemical fertilizers, biocides, has high yields, monocultures, scores low on nutritional and taste scores, the soil is basically dead.

2. Organic agriculture - doesn't use fertilizers, some biocide use allowed, monocultures, soils not greatly improved from conventional ag, same nutritional and taste profile but importantly it has lower yields than conventional ag but its soils are dead but no chemicals are allowed. Not workable.

3. Regenerative ag - now this is the next level organic, the goal here is soil health before anything, because with healthy soils plants don't need nutrients to be brought in from outside they get it from the ground via their roots with the air of mycorrhizal fungi. Plants growing on healthy soils are don't get sick. Healthy soils can only come about with flourishing life underneath, therefore fertilizers and pesticide that will kill those microorganisms in the soil are forbidden. Monocultures are a sin, diversity of plants is key, soils must always be covered, tillage is discouraged. The end goal is prodigious yields without any fertilizers even organic compost is not needed, after soil reaches its peak it usually takes 7 years - it is basically self sustaining. This is not theory it has been demonstrated by guys laws Masanobu Fukuoka, Bill Mollison, and Allan Savory.

The Srilanka is going through a famine thanks to adopting such nonsense called the next agriculture. Producing food for masses is not the same with crazy ideas like organic or regenerative farming model that dont scale. All those nice sounding sustainable agriculture are only good for kitchen garden of some hobbyist.

What part of what I said is not true.
Is not true that Srilanka banned chemical fertilizers...decided to go crazy..and shortly famined knocked their door.
And is not true that Srilanka now is going through a food crisis.
If it was just debt with China - Srilanka would have gone down long time ago.

Before Srilanka - Mao of China - had also adopted similar crazy ideas for crazy people like you - and China went through one of greatest famine ever since.

Ideas that work ; work because they have been tried and tested;

Organic and regenerative farming do not work - at a scale- required to feed a nation; chemical fertilizers and pesticides work.

Not true.

You don't know what you are talking about.

Don't embarrass yourself.

Sometimes I think Pundit just has too much time in his hands with nothing to do. He comments on things he has no idea about them. No need of even trying to argue with him here on this issue. Just makes no sense.

First of all you want to inform us China in those days of Mao had mass factories for producing chemical fertilizers? China in those days was a very underdeveloped country with most farmers doing subsistence farming.

Mao's farm reforms had nothing to do with organic farming. If you have any idea of socialism as interpreted by Mao and Josef Stalin those days you will know that the food production fell because of the land ownership reforms made by the country's leadership.

Where did I say Mao did organic farming or banned chemical fertilizers like crazy Srilanka now going hungry

Mao attempted crazy farming ideas - and the result was huge famine.

On the communes, a number of radical and controversial agricultural innovations were promoted at the behest of Mao. Many of these were based on the ideas of now discredited Soviet agronomist Trofim Lysenko and his followers. The policies included close cropping, whereby seeds were sown far more densely than normal on the incorrect assumption that seeds of the same class would not compete with each other.[28] Deep plowing (up to 2 meters deep) was encouraged on the mistaken belief that this would yield plants with extra large root systems.[citation needed] Moderately productive land was left unplanted with the belief that concentrating manure and effort on the most fertile land would lead to large per-acre productivity gains. Altogether, these untested innovations generally led to decreases in grain production rather than increases.[29]

My point is simple - we need to go for tried and tested scalable models - for farming now - it's chemical fertilizers+ quality seeds+ pesticides - otherwise the husbandry part is the same.

The model that works already exist - we just need to execute it (pour enough fertilizers, seeds and pesticides) - and we will have agricultural revolution in kenya

God forbid if any gov policy wonk or leaders start talking crap like organic or regenerative farming - that will be famine loading in a year.
