Fascinating. The weather system is messed up. In Oz we have rainy seasons now. 7 months of drenching hot summer, 4 months of hot weather and 1 month of a barely cold winter. Wasn't like that 10 years ago.

* Natural forests have dwindled over time. The Bay Area was once purely oak trees as recently as the turn of the 19th century.
*California has the hottest place on earth at Death Valley. Hotter than Kalahari or the Middle Eastern dunes.
* California has one of the highest densities of global millionaires who love green lawns and swimming pools.

I think there is a hotter place in Ethiopia than death valley.  I forget the name, but I can look it up. 

So you think this drought has human causes?

Deforestation is one of the leading causes of drought. Trees keep the water local in the area. If you cut trees the water cycle is broken and the water is leeched to the next ecosystem. Places with more trees get most rain.

By the way I also forgot to mention that wildfires have been decimating California forests in the recent past. It's become an annual event, man-triggered. The beautiful Yosemite is burning as we speak.

Irrigation was the first thing that popped in my mind. Wasn't sure if it was true or not.

Yeah between irrigating all farmlands, filling up the pools with metric tones of water, creating green lush lawns in desert conditions and wildfires it's a perfect storm lol. I think there are some pool restrictions in effect. Just in my neighborhood alone I can choose between 6 Olympic size pools (public) all within walking distance.

I have always thought the changes are due to climate change.  Something humans are not yet in a position to do anything about.

Yes. Because the world climate has been changing dramatic all over the billions of yrs when the man was contend with foraging and hunting. I doubt human activity has any serious role on world climate.
