Muthui Mkenya Exposes Uhuru's Tribal Thinking

Uhuru Kenyatta has always said he does not play the politics of ethnic mobilization. But yesterday, along Jogoo Road, he was quick to remind Kenyans that the Nairobi Jubilee team has a Kamba for Governor, Luhya for Senator, Kikuyu for Women Rep, Kalenjin for Deputy President and Kikuyu for President.

Ordinarily, tribes should never matter in the political choices the people make; that's why everyone is at pains to understand why Uhuru Kenyatta stooped that low to mention tribes in his erratic speech yesterday. But since he has chosen to dance in this mudbath, it is only fair that Kenyans call him out; and this fact-checking must not end until all politicians stop twisting facts to their own ends.
First. Johnson Sakaja is not Luhya. Johnson Sakaja is a Sabaot.

The 8-4-4 education curriculum has been blamed for many things, one of which is producing half-baked learners, but on this let us be fair to our GHC teachers.

You do not need to attend a GHC class to know that the Kalenjin ethnic group is divided into eight major sub-tribes; (i) Kipsigis, (ii) Nandi, (iii) Tugen, (iv) Marakwet, (v) Keiyo, (vi) Pokot, (vii) Sabaot and the (viii) Terik. If you went to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics code of ethnic groups, the Kalenjin also have two marginalized groups lumped together in their ranks; The hunting and gathering Ogieks living on the fringes of Mau Forest, and the fisher-folk Ilchamus, or Njemps, living on the fringes of Lake Baringo, Baringo County.

The most prominent Ilchamus is Thomas Letangule, the outgoing IEBC Commissioner. Do not pinch yourself too much for not knowing lawyer Juma Kiplenge, but he is the most famous Ogiek of the ones this country have ever been introduced to. Isaac Ruto is a Kipsigis. William Ruto is a Nandi. Jackson Mandago is a Nandi. Gideon Moi is a Tugen. Kipchumba Murkomen is a Marakwet. Nicholas Biwott is a Keiyo. Asman Kamama is a Pokot. And they have never hidden their proud identity from us all.

When it comes to picking your most famous Sabaot, you will be spoilt for choice. Opening the star-studded roll is Fred Kapondi, the guy who won the 2007 elections while in jail. You have Joseph Kimkung, the former Youth for KANU '92 National Coordinator whom William Ruto used to run errands for. Then you have John Serut, who, late last year, stunned a crowd when he said the primary job of the Jubilee government is to steal from the Kenyan taxpayer. Very honest chap, if you ask me.

However, anyone learning about the Sabaot would not miss to know Wycliffe Matakwei - the closest Kenya has come to having a Joseph Kony within their borders. Wycliffe Matakwei ran his own government in Mount Elgon, and taxed his own people to run his army, that the only way to stop him from annexing a section of this country and ruling it was Mwai Kibaki sending the elite military wing to hunt him down and bomb his caves.

The Sabaot Land Defence Forces (SLDF), for which Matakwei was the Commander-In-Chief, is now only in our history books.
I am not sure whether this sort of history was taught at the Lady Northey Nursery School, along State House Road, where Mrs. Marsden Madoka used to walk Uhuru Kenyatta to. At the time of going to press, we could not independently verify whether Uhuru Kenyatta attended Geography History and Civics (GHC) classes at St. Marys School, either.

The next time Uhuru Kenyatta introduces Johnson Sakaja as a Luhya, kindly stop the tape and give him a copy of the latest Standard 5 Social Studies text book for him to get familiar with the ethnic groups he is supposed to be taking care of. It is also beholded of Johnson Sakaja to stop masquerading as a Luhya and be proud of his Kalenjin roots, as there is no offense associating with William Ruto even though his fingers are stickier than super glue.

If Luhyas living in Nairobi wanted to elect their kinsman for the Senatorial seat, they know who their true son of the soil is. And it is not the convex-bellied Sabaot who doubles up as Uhuru Kenyatta's chief mascot.

This akin to Wamalwas who are Sabaot (father - sabaot (Arap Ngeiywa) -mother bukusu) but for political reason passes as Bukusu. I'd say half Bukusu are probably Kalenjin. Bungoma itself come from Kalenjin sub-tribe called Bungomek (cousin of Okiek- hunter-gather communities kalenjin found in kenya and adopted -Okiek are related to Sans & bushmen-with far asia blood -hence their 5 feet size) and all over Bukusu or Bungoma you'll find kalenjin names for places and people.

Sakaja of course is Kalenjin - his full name Sakaja Pkosgei Johnson Arthur - and his grandfather was Mt Elgon Mp in 60/70s.

Luhya is really amalgamation of mostly un-related people who happen to speak western bantu language - which is what is spoken in most of Eastern Ugandans. Bukusu nearest cousin would be the Bakisu of Uganda..not any of the kenyan luhyas. Sabaot and many kalenjin tribes were half-way into becoming Bukusu before colonialist arrived. The same case Tirikis were half-way into becoming Nandis. I'd say Bukusu is mixture of aboriginal Sirikwas, hunter-gathers (okiek-bungomek) and "luhyas".

Another interesting  info - is Mt Elgon maasai - majority of whom were relocated to Transmara - the Sunkulis etc - are Sakaja cousins - Sabaots passing for Maasai. The so called transmara maasai are essentially Kalenjin-Maa - those in Narok South are also Ilchamus-Tugen-Maa. Like Sabaot-Bukusu - most of Narok Maasai - speak both Kalenjin and maasai - and that make pure breed Purkos so mad - esp now that Ole Tunai (maasai from small clan -Siria) is governor courtsey of kipsigis, sabaots, nandis, keiyos and tugen masquerading as maasai clans.

Tough luck really finding a pure breed race.

The problem Bro, is that the Saboats and Bukusu / Tachoni are not bosom friends. There is a love hate relationship with the Kalenjin.

For example at independence the Bukusu voted with the Kalenjin against Kenyatta and against the advice of Elijah masinde. They followed Masinde Muliro.

However they would later join Kenyatta shingo upande for years.

In 1992, they were the fiercest opponents of Moi and never voted for him. Only the Tachoni around Webuye wobbled a bit.

In 2002 the followed Wamalwa Kijana whom they had also supported in 1997. In 2007 the Kikuyus who knew them left before elections :D. I think this year there will be no Kikuyu voting in Bukusuland unless he is armed.

The idea of Luhya as one group is fairly recent.  I think it took some colonial to figure out that these are probably the same people.  Sabaot have always had a close relationship with Bukusu with a heavy level of intermarriage.  Many of them, even those who have not officially become Busku actually speak Bukusu.
