I am suspecting this has got something to do with diet.

For majority kenyans, the diet has been reduced to ugali plus sukuma/cabbage.

I doubt if it was the same during and prior to independence.

Hard to say.  Reliable numbers.  Africa.  Over a couple of decades.  Controlled for many variables.  We are still some ways off.  I don't think we are any the wiser, whatever the source of this information.
