Tea sector finally start to diversify into speciality tea

This is only way to deal with black tea glut. Diversify into purple,herbal and green tea.

And it seem driven by private factories..meanwhile KTDA is a sleep.

To respond in brief: Is it time to move from "DEVELOPMENT" in the KTDA? Kenya is among the largest producers of tea. The original intentions of its creation are no longer valid.

KTDA should move aside and allow the creation of a different organization with new ideas to help the tea industry. KTDA has a bad reputation with farmers and is only kept alive by the ignorance of the farmers and the coercive power of government. If Farmers exercised their power properly, many of those factories would be privatized or form trusts and cartels to compete it out of business.

The problems facing Mumias Sugar will at some point visit KTDA.

KTDA long became irrelevant..when tea act was ammended by Kones tea act...at least where i come from..people have so many choices...What is happening now is that small private factories are giving farmers more choice in addition to multinationals.

The Tea Directorate in the Ministry of Agriculture has blocked a section of Kangema tea farmers from selling their produce to a private company.

The farmers from Mutunguru tea buying centre had signed a contract with Ngorongo Tea Factory in Kiambu county.

The Kenya Tea Development Agency has refused to buy their produce for more than a month for failing to sign the Green Leaf Supply Agreement.

The farmers claim Zone Four KTDA board member Francis Macharia incited the directorate to terminate their contract with Ngorongo so they adhere to KTDA rules.

"The letter we received said we cannot continue selling tea to Ngorongo because it is illegal for a factory to buy tea from more than 100 kilometres away," said farmer John Gateru.

KTDA was sneak "privatized". I am not sure if the theft of the factories has been completed yet. It is reduced to exploiting small scale farmers and scamming on fertilizers and other inputs.
