What's the Real % of the Middle Class in Kenya?
« on: October 29, 2024, 05:22:23 PM »
I keep hearing people referring to this middle class.  I even saw someone say that it's 60% of the population, but what is the real percentage and how is middle class defined in Kenya? I suggested that the real middle class was maybe about 5% of the population, but someone said that was too low and it was probably closer to 20%.

Does anyone have the real figures or the real definition of what qualifies as middle class?

Middle class in kenya term is anyone who earn 30K hivi - they are the majority.
But real middle class - or upper middle class (in WB/IMF) term is someone who make 4000usd per person year in kenya.
For a family of 2 kids - that is about 16,000usd.
Now how many kenyans are proper middle class - you have to find income/expenditure data
And then take our those who make 4,000usd per capita.

Kenya is now lower middle class - 2,000usd per capita.

So, that's about $230 dollars a month and these people mainly do what for a living and would live where? In Nairobi, what places and if some are in the village, what parts of Kenya (must be only in the farming zones)

If you are looking at in US standards, they are about 3-5% of Kenya. Mpigs, judges, CS, governors, senators, MCAs, senior government officials, businessmen, etc. are technically middle class, but in Kenya, I think anyone with 25-40K salary or a famer/hustler with 'nyumba ya cable, T, L and semi-finished house is middle class
