Because of the mixture and composure of al shabab ,while Islam extremism/Jihadism is the main goal, Their are also a plethora of reasons many people join,like said  Somali bantus and Rahanweyn are the disadvantaged somalis so thats why many find a cause to escape poverty and discrimination, initially when shabaab was populated with Hawiye and darod there was a good level of somali nationalism in it masked as islamic fundamentalism,I would even say their is a level of racial cause where those 2 mentioned clans fought against AU and their supporters.
