Social Media Influencers & "Luxury" Kenya
« on: November 18, 2021, 10:43:07 PM »
It appears that urban middle class Kenyan millenials have decided that 9 to 5 employment is no longer for them and they are flocking to social media (youtube and instagram) to try and earn a living from there.  They are online 24/7. Taking pictures of themselves in luxurious hotels and restaurants. Eating sushi. Drinking Martini's. Wearing designer clothes. Who are these companies that are paying them to do this? or are they freeloaders? getting free meals at the social house and free vacations and in exchange, being asked to promote these places online?

Everyone is saying the economy went downhill during the lockdown, but you wouldn't know it by watching these social media influencers. They have zero interest in the political dynamics of Kenya and actually behave as if they are living in New York or Los Angeles. Physically, they are in Kenya, but virtually, their entire lives are based on what they're watching about the US from Netflix, youtube and cable tv.
